Actors who should have been or should be the Doctor

Finally, and at the risk of getting lynched, I'm going to join the 'no female Doctor!' camp

Of course we won't, dear Perp. Hanging is too good for you. JOKING!!!! :giggle:

I think Maggie Smith would make a great doctor and since Steven Moffat has juggled with the rules significantly already (I quote my Who-obsessed daughter here, rather than speaking from my own knowledge) it seems possible the next reincarnation could be female. :p

I'm more amused by the argument that the Doctor must be British.

There is a precedent for Time Lords changing nationality; The Master was American in the 1996 TV movie (played by the greatly under-rated and insanely workaholic Eric Roberts - IMDb lists him as currently having 55! projects in various stages of development and post production.) Mind you, The Master was also shown as a crawly snaky thing - so there's no real reason why Time Lords even have to appear as human. Why not an animal? Dogtor Who?

I didn't think suggesting a female doctor would stimulate such lively debate(or did I, he writes with a sly wink :) ). I think Helen Mirren would have been a great choice a few years earlier in her career.

I think the snaky thing was nothing to do with him being a Time Lord, the inference was it was something the Master had done to himself to escape death. His actual body was exterminated by the pepper-pots.

It suddenly struck me, that between my three female suggestions and willwallace's one, we've actually picked for British Dames...

And then there is Bill Nighy, a name that was batted around a few times.
I read through this whole thread thinking, "no one said Bill Nighy." I was sure Bill Nighy would be given the role. Maybe it was offered and he didn't want it. Doctor Who actors do have a problem getting away from the role.

Perhaps he was. He would have been terrific.

I've got another two to throw in: Anthony Head (who did actually audition in the 90s but lost to Paul McGanne). And let's face it, Giles in Buffy effectively WAS the Doctor just missing the screwdriver and the blue box and turned down to 7.

And also, the late great Pete "You can't kill me" Postlethwait. Another great missed opportunity!

I don’t really like Dr Who (it feels a bit silly and too British-by-numbers for me) but I'd nominate Julie Andrews circa Mary Poppins.

On the subject of eating ones words, all I have to say is: pass the ketchup, Jodie Whittaker is awesome.

I just wanted people to know that in the lead up to Ms Whittaker's unveiling I lost £10 betting on Polly Walker (150\1)

To return to the original subject somewhat, I would have nominated the late Robert Hardy to play the Doctor. He was a wonderful actor and could have played the Doctor with the equal parts gravitas and whimsy required of a slightly mad Time Lord. Of course, there's a very tiny bit of Hardy in Peter Davison's version.

Brian Blessed would have been another of my choices at some point.

Robert Downey Jr. would be terrific in the role.
