Star Trek Discovery renewed for season 2

CBSAA is doing something called "Short Treks", 15+/- minute films set in the Discovery universe. The first one, running now, is fantastic! The next one premiers November 8th.

On of the episodes' was written by Michael Chabon.

The first Short Trek was good except and it's a HUGE exception is the way they ended it. Transporters only work over a relatively short space. Tilly said they were far away from her home. Not on orbit. It's the same damn thing Into Darkness did when Khan beamed to the Klingon home world. It's unforgivable. I think transporters at this time had around a 60,000 Km range.

Transporters only work over a relatively short space.
Actually, they can work long distance. This was mentioned in a DS9 Episode. Apparently, it requires a good deal of resources, because such trips take scheduling, and the waiting list is long.

Actually, they can work long distance.

First off you are talking about a different time period. Second on DS9 they were still talking about a short distance relative to interstellar travel. The longest form a work Federation tech transport was subspace transport. This required much more than a standard transporter and was still limited to a few light years .

Worf's parents were on TNG not DS9. I can't recall any such transport on DS9 with anyone. I could be wrong I've only watched it front to back 3 or 4 times since it aired. In the movies (Klevin Timeline ie who gives a crap) Spock from the future gave them something called transwarp transporters. Discovery is supposed to be in the prime timeline.

NEW YORK — Star Trek: Discovery’s second season is still a few months away, but the cast and crew are nearly done filming the whole thing. In Season 1, the cast was still finding their footing and establishing their characters’ basic personalities. With that exposition under their belts, though, it’s time for the senior staff of the U.S.S. Discovery to boldly go — well, you know the rest.

At New York Comic Con 2018, I attended a series of press roundtables with the Star Trek: Discovery cast and producers. Each participant explained what’s new for his or her character in Discovery Season 2, exercising extreme caution not to brush up against too many spoilers. Here’s what I learned from each one:
'Star Trek: Discovery' Cast Reveals Season 2 Secrets

Hi Guys,

OMG did you not see the same show I did? Lord my DVD arrived a few days ago and I watched the whole season one wanting to cry. Discovery is such a betrayal of Trek that I don't even know where to begin.

Sorry guys, but I have to rant somewhere. Those of sensitive dispositions should look away.

It started with the horror make up of the Klingons - they aren't Klingons. I mean I'm sure the make up was good but really the first thing you should do when making a Klingon is actually try for a Klingon. These things were just monsters of the week from a dozen other shows. How do you get Worf or Torres from them?

Then we got the betrayal by our MC. Poorly acted, poorly written. Look if she's going to betray her Captain to save her ship, her crew and her world, shouldn't there have been some true passion? Some terror forcing her to take this drastic step? But it really felt as if she was simply reading from the script.

Then comes the trial. Three judges, spotlit in a dark chamber? I mean really? Can anyone say melodrama without any even vague attempt at realism. But hey, they used the same stupid lighting for the lab where she was assigned on the new ship for the first few epps. How stupid are these future people? Designing lighting that would have everyone in the lab tripping over their own feet everywhere?

Roll on to the spore drive - OMG how utterly ludicrous! Magic mushrooms galore! The writers were obviously on them!

After that we hit the big faults, starting with the fact that this is grimdark in space. It just ain't Trek. Trek is optimism. Its about good people in a bad / scary place sometimes, but always with high ideals and desperately trying to make the galaxy a better place. This is something else. Something truly awful. A bleak universe, filled with bleak people who will betray one another at the drop of a hat. None of them should be in Starfleet. Who did their psych evaluations? Hannibal Lector?

And where was the camaraderie? The crew being a family against the universe? The backbone of every Trek? This crew weren't a family. They weren't even friends. And quite frankly not a one of them, save for the desperate attempts of the cadet to please, was even vaguely likeable. And here's the problem with that - and with all grimdark. I didn't like any of them and I wouldn't have given a tinker's damn if they'd fallen into a black hole! (As an aside grimdark aims to show real people with feet of clay - at least that's what they say. But they never do that. They show jerks. And this was a crew of jerks. But that probably explains why the ship was empty - they couldn't stand each other and didn't want to be near the rest.)

And then we come to the truly horrible plot failures. So you're at war and being a good Starfleet admiral you want to commit genocide?! Well ignoring that unbelievable betrayal of everything that Starfleet is supposed to be about, why did she need to hire a megalomaniac from another universe and make her Captain? Couldn't she do it herself? And why wasn't the admiral locked up?

But then comes the end - another unbelievable mess and an anticlimax. Followed by our MC giving some sort of speech to a rapturous Starfleet audience as if she's a conquering hero. Why? She's still a prisoner, representing nothing that Starfleet stands for who may have earned her freedom, standing there as if she's a paragon of virtue!

Sorry guys, this thing was an appalling mess and a complete betrayal of everything Trek is. I won't be watching season two.

Cheers, Greg.

Season 1 was so well put together, it was unbelievable! From a story-telling perspective (and not, perhaps, an overall Trek timeline), this was superb. I enjoyed the storyline season, rather than the old episodic method!

Easily, this was the best first season of all Star Trek series. I'm looking forward to Season 2. I love quality entertainment! :)

I enjoyed it. There was more there that I liked than I didn't but since it finished I've heard a lot of horror stories going on behind the scenes. Like pro Kalvin Timeline executives who don't even like Star Trek firing and hiring and committing plagiarism

Star Trek: Discovery Season 2 trailer and poster are filled with fun times

Season 2 of Star Trek: Discovery debuts January 17, and CBS All Access just confirmed to Deadline Hollywood that it will be producing a spinoff series starring Michelle Yeoh. Yeoh plays Federation Captain Philippa Georgiou on the series; rumors that the character would get a spinoff surfaced in November. This should hopefully blunt fan disappointment over the shelving of a planned Star Trek 4 movie (a sequel to Star Trek Beyond).

The spinoff will be co-produced by Bo Yeon Kim and Erika Lippoldt and will focus on Capt. Georgiou's work with Starfleet's secretive Section 31 (long part of the Star Trek canon since it was first introduced on Deep Space Nine in the 1990s). The original Capt. Georgiou died early on in Season 1 but soon reappeared via a mirror universe, and she has been a fan favorite ever since. Georgiou was approached by Section 31 in the season finale, and since she appears in teaser trailers for the upcoming season, it's safe to assume Yeoh will still show up occasionally on Discovery.

Yeoh has long been a familiar face to fans of Hong Kong action movies. I've loved her ever since she co-starred with Jackie Chan in 1992's Police Story 3: Super Cop; like Chan, she did her own stunts, including an impressive motorcycle jump in that film's climactic sequence. Her roles in Tomorrow Never Dies (1997) and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) brought her fame in America as well.

Star Trek executive producer Alex Kurtzman seems to share our enthusiasm. "Michelle has shattered ceilings, broken boundaries, and astonished us with her grace and gravitas for decades," he said in a statement to Deadline Hollywood. "As a human, I adore her. As an actor, I revere her. We're all thrilled to explore the next wild chapter in the life of Captain Philippa Georgiou."

Yeoh herself seems ecstatic at the news, especially since Crazy Rich Asians (in which she plays wealthy matriarch Eleanor Young) just won the Critics Choice Award for Best Comedy last night. "I'm so excited to continue telling these rich Star Trek stories," the actor said. "Being a part of this Universe and this character specifically has been such a joy for me to play. I can't wait to see where it all goes–certainly I believe it will go ‘where no WOMAN has ever gone before!'"
