Dune Film/TV Comeback

Oh jeez. Just seen who the director is. I think I'll be giving this a miss.

Villeneuve's Bladerunner 2049 was far too pedestrian and Dune is likely to be even more glacial in his hands. This could be the first movie ever where viewers in a cinema die of old age before the end credits are reached.

Now we can expect at least two films. I'm hoping he means to cover Dune in two films and not Dune and a sequel to be pizzled later.

Two films would work well with Dune. They could roughly split it around the Harkonan attack. Leaving the first film to set the scene and run the invasion and to drive Leto and others out; whilst the second film can be essentially his training, his conversion and the rise of the Fremen.

That would end each film with a big battle; although granted the last battle is the biggest and most epic. Plus it would actually leave a lot of room in the first film to cover the slower scenes; things like the blackbox and GomJabbar need a slower build up to them rather to really work.

Yes two films of at least three hours apiece are needed to do Dune justice. That and a spectacular script with no input from Bobo and Teh Hack.

Having recently watched Blade Runner 2049, i will be interested in seeing this.

I appear to be one of the few that still holds Lynch's version in high regard.

Not the only one @Rodders. Visually I think his Dune is wonderful and there are a lot of good things about it, but the changes made to the story are what really ruined it.

So where do you think the break should be? Paul becoming Maud’Dib?

It will likely be around the point of Paul fleeing to the Fremen and starting on the path of becoming Muad'Dib. It makes for a very good movie breakpoint.

They get to have a big end-of-film battle in when the Barron attacks; they get to have a big revelation on the worms, becoming Muad'Dib and all and then at the start of the next film there's his training and the rise of his position within the Fremen; the Wyrding (sp) weapons and the rebellion rising up all building to the big end of movie battle with the Worms and the Emperor.


The risk is the actual escape scene and the change into Muad'Dib - quite a lot of big events happen there and its quite a heavy impacting and chunky set of scenes.

I think Paul becoming a wormrider might work as a breakpoint. Paul and Stilgar lead the Fremen on their journey south... fade to black.

Lynch sure tried. Don't know if everyone has seen the later day interviews with Lynch where he says he should never have attempted the movie. He did ace The Elephant Man, but this was only his second Hollywood movie, plus he had to deal with De Laurentiis. Lynch sure had an eye for production design, as good as Ridley Scott, and what a lovely cast! But Dune has a Blivit problem, 1000 pounds of prose narrative does not go well into a 10 pound visual narrative bag. Well Lynch did want a longer film. It is the adaptor's imagination that is tasked for a book like DUNE. The TV series handled this better , but , by my lights, that was a lackluster work. Villeneuve has shown himself to be a very serious film maker and here is a case of a director who is actually a fan of the material. (Sometimes one even have good directors indifferent to a good work.) It will be interesting to see.

Oh, I loved The Arrival and Blade Runner 2049. He's a talented director. I just don't want Star Wars to influence Dune. Dune influenced Star Wars.
