A Rediscovery of Clifford D. Simak - A Reading Challenge

Please, Hugh, I knew you were joking! (If I didn't, you'd be dead now...!)

Seriously, though: I don't think they freebied WAY STATION because it was a "classic;" it wasn't, yet.
My mother never found comic book covers to be particularly salacious, so that was never a problem for me. But in any case, most of the comic books available when I was young were from Disney (I was very fond of "Uncle Scrooge," which usually had a higher level of fantasy than most Disney products -- and boy! I guess that was a strange thing to say!)) (But they also did "Turok, Son of Stone," a series about a couple of American Indians, pre-white man, who fell into some kind of lost world that had dinosaurs and such...)
Marvel had not yet blossomed ono the comic book scene, so the "adventure" comic books were usually war stories, westerns, or the D.C. books (i.e., Superman, Batman, etc.)

If they ever made Waystation into a film, I would want to see Hayoa Miyazaki do it it . And I would want to see him do City as well. They would be specautlar films especially with his particular style animation and story telling.

Not likely, I think -- I mean, I don't know who Hayoa Miyazaki is, or who he works with. But I can tell you that there is a person/organization that has had the film rights option for six years now. He/they must have done a great deal on their project.
This is the longest that anyone had held onto an option on WAY STATION.
In the years since Cliff's death, that particular book has been optioned out almost constantly. People negotiate for the option -- usually it's a one-year option, with the right to renew for another year. Most option-holders keep their right for a year or two, maybe three, and once four -- and then let go.
And so far, there has always been someone else bidding to step up and have a try.
(In the three months leading up to the last option-ending date, I had nine people indicate that they were interested in taking up the option -- but, as I say, the current holder renewed, so I had to give all nine the bad news... That turns out to be rather difficult...)
What I'm saying is, there seems to be a better chance for a WAY STATION movie than there has ever been. Hang in there, Simak fans!

Oh, and by the way: Open Road Media (the people who've been publishing my Simak collections) have recently issued trade-paperback versions of TIME IS THE SIMPLEST THING, A HERITAGE OF STARS, and GOBLIN RESERVATION (all in late 2017), and HIGHWAY OF ETERNITY, MASTODONIA, SPECIAL DELIVERANCE, ENCHANTED PILGRIMAGE, and A CHOICE OF GODS (all in 2018).

For Waystation , I want the best possible director and producer , someone who has respect for the story. In other words , I don't want see a director like Michale Bay anywhere near this one.

There used to be some sort of trailer for a Way Station film on youtube. I think it's long gone. Must have been more than six years ago. It did seem that someone had done some ground work, but it mainly consisted of a view of the house, some voice-over and sound effects, if I remember right.

Could it be fan made perhaps ? Some of those are quite good.

Outside of that one Outer Limts episode, I don't recall ever being adapted for anything else.

I suspect that's the case. (the "fan-made" part, I mean)
Some people who want to be filmmakers do occasionally cross the legal lines, of course -- I remember that before Cliff's death, we got a report that someone in eastern Europe somewhere had made a film of ALL FLESH IS GRASS.
It was done without Cliff's permission, and we never managed to track down any info on it (Cliff's death occurred soon after, so the problem was put aside...). It seemed useless to worry about it, anyway, because countries in that region had no regard for U.S. copyrights at that time...

Yes, and Cliff hated that one -- it's the one that led him to say that "Good Night, Mr. James" was the only one of his stories to be adapted for television because it was so vicious.
(Several of Cliff's stories were adapted for radio plays, though, and one for a Broadway play)

ive seen that episode numerous times. I have to admit liking it.

We talked about it a bit in the yahoo Simak fan group at the time. As I remember it we thought it looked professional, but it must be eight or nine years ago. Anyway, I haven't seen it for several years now.

In true Nerd-fashion, here's my entry in the Fan Group for 19.04.2008:

There is a one minute clip from Peter Winther's film of Way Station on youtube. Apparently the film is in
production. I don't know whether to look forward to this or not. It would be great if this brought CDS' writing more into public awareness.
Anyone know more about this?
Hugh

and here's an answer:
Looking into the Way Station film, I found it was to be produced by Revelstone Entertainment and released in 2007. However, the date of posting was like 2004-2005. The film rights were optioned then.

Peter Winther is a name I've encountered before -- I'm pretty sure he's in Hollywood, not overseas. If my foggy memory serves, he at least tried to get an option on that book (I'm not sure, but I think he was front man for an organization...). (He called me once, on my cell phone; but he caught me just as I was leaving my dentist's office, and I was a bit groggy...)
I also think we may have had brief dealings on a different Simak title, but don't quote me on that...At no point, however, did Mr. Winther say anything about a trailer or a clip...
It is a puzzlement.

AND what do you know? Here's that trailer for Way Station...

Hmmm. Not sure at all, but could be a lot worse. Difficult to draw conclusions at this early stage. Still, all in the past, I suspect. From from you wrote above, other people have the option right now.

What does anyone think about Special Deliverance? I haven't read it or got a copy. A firned listed it with about 20 other books he has read three or more times -- and it was the only one of them that he did not recommend.
