Recommend me some scifi. I prefer lighter, less grim works. I'm ok with series or standalones. Just tell me why I might like it - hit the high points. Some that I have read and enjoyed:

Anyway how about The Lensman series? It was a runner-up for the 1966 Hugo Award for Best All-Time Series (to the Foundation series, so no shame there). However, it's so well known I bet you've read it.

Lensman is good but its a bit clunky.

The Stainless Steel Rat by Harry Harrison . The main character Jim Degriz is a liable intergalactic . con artist and thief and some of his caper are really off the wall . There are several book isn this fun off the wall series.

Bill the Galactic Hero by Harry Harrison Billi is big dumb and duty concciens and he get enlist into the glaitc military and has one crash adventure after another. Its hislroulsy funny. and its send up of mislay scones fiction .

Caiphis Cain Hero of the Imperium by Sandy Mitchell is bacilli Flashman in outer space, Its a comic science fction series set in the Warhammer 40 K universe and it a positive joy read. Caiphis Cain is imperil commissar who would like night bette then to serve out his tour of duty away from the war. Unfortunately despite his best efforts he end smack dab in the missile of the vey war he is trying to avid ans has to use which and skill save his own skin . The problem is its contrived to to the predation that he great fighter and hero of the imeperiousn an it s gotten so bad for him that he maintain the isslluion that he is hero. But the funny thins is he actual is heroic and a good guy.

Yes, I know that there will be some that I've already read - perhaps another reader of this post might find something good too! I haven't read a whole lot of classic scifi or rather much written before the 80s. So I'll have a looksee at Lensman. Thanks!

Do you have to have read any other Warhammer stuff? I've not played or read anything in this universe so am completely unfamiliar with it.

The Stainless Steel Rat and Bill the Galactic Hero are old friends of mine, good rec.

You might enjoy Stark's War by John Hemry/Jack Campbell.
You might also enjoy the Kris Longknife series, but they start at "a bit silly" and progress onwards from there.

David Brins's Uplift series is pretty good
1. Sundiver
2. Star tide Rising
3. The uplift War

Mankind ventures out in the universe and meets alien races none of whom eveidoed to sentences naturally , in fact they were uplifted to that star by older races and those races the same thing. In fact mankind is the only know race in the galaxy to ve evolved to sensitive nataully and everyone is bailey jealous us for that reason . Mankind has upkifed other species to sneticnaes an awareness . Chimps and Dolphins and they are some the most interesting character in this series. And also out civilization got into space with the benefit of anince left over tech and knonesg bu the unknown myerisous progenitor race that began the whole uplisiging of life in th galaxy.. This series is a blast !

On the lighter side:

I've really enjoyed Laurence Dahmer's Ell Donsaii series. The books are all shortish 280-250 pages and filled with interesting ideas, believable conflict, and a hero who is both brilliant, modest, and hyper-talented. I'm in the process of reading the entire series a second time.

(and goes on to 12? 14? titles)

On the Hard SF side, (but not so hard as to be hard to understand)

The Martian by Andy Weir ..... A cracking good yarn, which is almost entirely possible with today's technology.

Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky .... This is a well written story about an "Uplift" but very, very, different than David Brin's books. It painted some pictures in my head that I still think about. But not at all in a horror sense.

You may have already read The Forever War, but if not, its a good military, sci f, for fans of Old Mans War.

The next book in the series, 'Indomitable', was published three weeks ago.

I tried the Kris Longknife series and didn't finish the first book. Something didn't sit well with me though I can't remember exactly what it was.

Nathan Hystad is currently riding high in the SF charts for his alien invasion story, The Event
Dennis E Taylor's Bobiverse is much loved by many and apparently huge fun (it is on my TBR but every time I look at that pile, it's got longer)
Dan Jones Man O'War is a thought-provoking take on AI. Well, sex dolls, specifically. Which is definitely a USP.

Excellent recs! I've added Kern and Hystad to my list and We are Legion was already on my list to be read. I've left off Dan Jones' work as most stories involving AI are something to be avoided, for reasons.

Having just read and totally enjoyed Neal Asher's Transformation series, I would recommend that, too. It is brilliant, but not too light

I've read (and enjoyed the heck out of) both The Stainless Steel Rat and The Hitchhikers Guide. Haven't tried Neal Asher yet, I'll check that out. Thanks!
