Ok, I'll bite. I don't see any reason why we can't start another challenge before the last one wraps up, since there's no correlation as far as who runs them. I hereby declare the games open, and I also hereby declare that this shall not deter the finish of SSX from ...err... finishing. This means you, phyre-y friend.

For those unfamiliar with our customs, this is the challenge known as Sekrit Santa, in which the following happens, on a random schedule:

people who would like to participate announce below just what sort of story they would like an anonymous person to write for them -- "SF romance with dragons", or "shamanistic fantasy adventure with optional singing frog" or whatever. There is a certain contingent among the participants that prefers the requests not be too outlandish, or at least that the outlandish elements be optional, but another contingent looks forward to whatever fate throws, so feel free to express a preference in that direction if you wish. The story fairy may take pity. See previous SS challenge threads for a general idea of what the requests look like.

After the requests are all in (reasonable amount of time for requesting to be determined, but generally at least a couple of weeks to cuss and discuss), the story fairy bestows the requests upon their anonymous recipients -- if you make a request, you get someone else's request to write.

You then have (reasonable amount of time for writing the stories to be determined) some time, generally at least a month or two, to write a story of no less than 1000 words and up to as many as you wish.

You send the story to me (the story fairy) and when they are (mostly) all in, I will send the stories out to the people for whom they were written.

Then I post excerpts of all the stories in the guessing thread, and everyone gets to try and guess who wrote what. After that, the authors are unveiled.

It's up to the author of the story whether to post the whole thing here (via attachment, mostly, as they tend to be larger than the allowed 1500 word limit), which some do and some do not -- some are thinking of publishing the story and don't want it being disqualified for that -- but you generally get to read at least a handful of the other stories here.

I exhort you (as the total hypocrite that I am) to make every effort to participate once you are assigned a story. You have plenty of time to back out before the stories are assigned, but after that it messes up the algorithms and makes people cranky if you don't write.

Let the games begin!

Yeah, umm, ok, it did occur to me on the way to work this morning that “SF romance with dragons” might be better utilized as an example of the outlandish than as the prime example of what a request should look like. In my defense, I was not awake when I posted the above.

And, you see, I was going to go with "Dinner date with a Cetacean", but now...

Kidding aside, I am willing to participate. I have not thought of a request yet, though, so I will post that in a bit. I will probably give an absurd one and a more conventional one, so whichever poor soul lucky participant receives mine may choose between the two.

Ok, being now of more sound (or at least awake) mind, I'll fill in the blanks from this morning.

Let's try for one week to get requests in, since it really doesn't take that long to think of a story idea when you're not the one who has to write it. If it seems necessary to extend at that point, we can revise it. Since I'm off on weekends, I'll do the magic potions and runes and such next weekend and send out the requests.

Shall we try for writing during June and see if we can't get the stories in by the end of the month? That would wrap up before the next 300 starts, if it works out. Again, we can revise if necessary. But I think one of the problems we've been having with getting the stories written is that the time frame keeps stretching longer and longer, and it's too easy to put things off if you have too much time. I know whereof I speak, believe me. :D So maybe if it's a tighter deadline, it will provide more focused inspiration. Hell, get it short enough and I might get a story done, myself! Anyone up for the two-day SS? :p

I'd like a story about a futuristic city that's tightly integrated with the environment.

Sounds like a plan for me. I would like one of these options:

The standard option: a political SF about peace negotiations between a hedonistic and a Spartan society (may or may not be the same species).

The "colorful" option: an uplifted pod of dolphins going on holiday to Europa.

I'm in. (By the way, I believe I have my story for SSX on my other computer, so I should be able to send it to you in a day or so.)

I'd like an alternate history story without any famous people in it; just how daily life is different from "our" world.

It's been a while since I entered one of these secret things. I'm in.

I request a surreal horror focused around a seashell. :)

Does having rules (an interesting concept withal) mean I should restrict myself to one tale? Admittedly it would make the 'who wrotes' easier.

I would like a story of a dragon school teacher's arrival fresh from the academy at her first teaching post. If this is too bizarre, I will take a flying forest. I have started stories with each of these themes, but never got anywhere with them, so am hoping this will stimulate me to a more successful try.

Sod it, if we can get it all done before the end of June, I'm game.

I'd like something about two hostile brothers with a strong sense of the absurd.

And, you see, I was going to go with "Dinner date with a Cetacean", but now...

I actually think that's quite an interesting brief! I'd have a whale of a time with that ;)

So, what you are saying is that you are going to find a way to work it in there if you get my story? I won't object... truth be told, if someone actually wanted to do this as a third option, I would be fine with that.

And, if you want the context of that particular comment, start at post #23... What say you of this blurb?

Oops, forgot I was supposed to be doing this over the weekend. I’ll sort out what we have tonight and go from there.

Ok, so far we have the following:

sinister42: Give me a steampunk noir detective story.

Joshua Jones: The standard option: a political SF about peace negotiations between a hedonistic and a Spartan society (may or may not be the same species).
OR
The "colorful" option: an uplifted pod of dolphins going on holiday to Europa.
OR
"Dinner date with a Cetacean"

johnnyjet: I'd like a story about a futuristic city that's tightly integrated with the environment.

Victoria Silverwolf: I'd like an alternate history story without any famous people in it; just how daily life is different from "our" world.

Ashleyne: I request a surreal horror focused around a seashell.

chrispenycate: I would like a story of a dragon school teacher's arrival fresh from the academy at her first teaching post. If this is too bizarre, I will take a flying forest.

Dan Jones: I'd like something about two hostile brothers with a strong sense of the absurd.

Anyone else want in? Speak now or forever hold your peace.

I like all of these prompts! I have ideas for just about every one of them. There are a handful of them I may write even if I don't get them!
