OK we have seen 9 episodes of Star Trek Discovery. Everybody including myself said they would hold off judgement on the series until they've seen it. Some never even bothered to check it out, but for those who did, how do you rank it? PS message boards like Reddit I see it's very popular and definitely ranks up there as one of the best new shows of 2017.

What did you like? What didn't you like?

For me. I loved the character development, the spore drive, and the graphics. Mudd is cool as well as seeing the Klingon side of things. Klingons have always changed their looks so I don't care about that. I miss T'Kuvma. I was hoping to see more of him. Easily up there as one of Star Trek's biggest badasses even though we only got him for a few moments. Kol was kinda dim-witted so I am glad his reign of power is over. Couldn't care less about the L'Rell. Though I have a feeling she is important.

I don't care much about the Shenzhou or Burnham's backstory. The Vulcan stuff just feels like filler. She could easily just have been a regular human mutineer and that would have been more than enough. So sometimes the show can be overly complex where it doesn't need to be. Sarek can easily be cut out altogether. The mind-meld episode was my least favorite. I have a feeling I'll be talking about the Battle of the Binary Stars years from now.

^The greatest moment of the series so far!

Sticking point for me is that we still don't know exactly what is wrong with Stamets. Did he tell anyone about his momentary time-bending lapses? I know the Doctor ran tests but tests can only tell you so much. Episodes 8 and 9 were the best of the season so far.

In conclusion: I think it's the best Trek yet, and we are only 9 episodes in. No Trek was this good 9 episodes in!

Can there be an option between 1 and two? I like what they've done so far, but I don't think it is best thing ever produced under the Star Trek name. Nor am I that bothered with the canon time-line. It might be an alternate timeline, then again maybe not.

I can't edit the poll to add a simple I liked it. I just saw that I need that option after I hit submit.

My vote goes as best Star Trek ever. We have strong characters, even if they have personnel issues. I cannot remember any other Trek where we could see so many outerspace animals and that spore thing is amazing.

I like Michael's background and the fact we know more about Spock's family.

I don't like they make us wait 2 months to see the other episodes from the first season. Com'on, they decided a season has only 15 episodes. why split it in almost a half and then wait again for the 2nd season ?

I can't wait to see next episode and find out where they were sent by the sporedrive.

Because the CGI takes time. All of that stuff has to get approved and some details are tricky to make. They ordered reshoots earlier this year and they were finished at some point in summer. Since then they've been in the post-process and not sitting on some shelf. The actors themselves have said that they get to see the stuff when it airs. The Orville is much easier series to produce, and most probably much cheaper.

I understand it takes time, but they could film the entire season before going live, couldn't they ?

If all props and sets are ready then yes. Otherwise you've no choice but to string out the production along the year. Thing is, they aren't just doing this season as I'm pretty confident they've already started putting together some of the next season stuff as well.

I like it (which is solid praise for star trek, as I only like kirk based star trek, tng sucked). But... The spore drive is ridiculous. It's the only real downside for me.

I voted "I like it" which really seems like very faint praise, but I just can't go as far as to say "It's the best Star Trek series ever." There needs to be something in between for me. My main problem with the 'Spore Drive' was never seeing it in the series set after it, but I think that is being explained. In fact, many of the things that might have been problems, have explanations if you keep watching. As for 'canon' I'm afraid Voyager, and more especially Enterprise already did for that. Even the mid-season cliffhanger has grown on me - now that there is a question of whether...
they won't return home.
As for having a mid-season split, that seems to be usual for US TV now, and the BBC have even done it with Dr Who.
No Trek was this good 9 episodes in!
You do make a very good point. The Original Series apart, I was lukewarm about every Star Trek series until after the third Season. I think even Enterprise would have improved if they had given it more time. I would still go for TNG or DS9 as the best though. If Discovery gets three Seasons then I'll let you know if I've changed my mind.

I liked it a lot, but it's not best ever.

Some very good ideas.
Not that nuts about Mudd, but not a bad twist.

I don't like the Klingon shapes, but ok.
Making them even more ugly to reinforce the fact that they're baddies is a bit naff. As is getting them to eat people, even their own.
And I'm bored with having to replay all their bits to keep up with the sub titles and see what they're doing. (I'm not going to learn Klingon any time soon.)

I agree, this was the best first 9 episodes of any ST series!

I almost stopped watching TNG mid-season, but glad I stuck with it. :)

I'll hold off calling this the best ever, but it's got a solid start toward that goal!

The character I am most interested in, is actually Airiam, due to a fascination with posthumanism I guess. I hope they go somewhere with this.

DS9 was so cheesy I couldn't watch it for years. Even after multiple tries. I couldn't get past the pilot. So, so bad. Thank God for the secondary characters and the best buddy pairing on TV Quark and Odo! Otherwise I probably still wouldn't want to watch it.

* I just saw the whole thing for the first time last year.

TNG was just before my time when it was on air. I think I binged and then caught Locutus on live TV and that was during Spike TV's first run of TNG marathon. Since I was one year old when the original episode aired. I must have bought the DVDs over time, because I have them all.

This star trek watching live experience is all new to me.

Yes! We need more time with the bridge crew. We have (four?) other bridge officers that look like they have fascinating stories to tell.

Seriously guys ? We have 6 votes *like* against 2 votes as the best Star Trek ? :p

As I could see from the threads dedicated to this series, we are several who watch every episode with much more interest than a simple *like*. Should we add another question intermediate between *the best* and *like* ?
