Star Trek - Discovery - 1.09: Into the Forest I Go

So how is it that the Federation never developed cloaking devices of their own?

Politics. Knowing humans, we would have collected, and examined every piece of Klingon scrap until we'd have been able to backengineer their technology or possibly found ways to troll their race by applying science to counter the stuff. In the ST universe they've forgotten truly dirty hacker tactics. The fun stuff as Steve Wozniak would have described it. So I believe it eventually came down to the politics as the cloaks make bad diplomacy. After all they're on a mission of peace.

Of course, if you watched the final TNG episode, you know that didn't last. ;)

Oh yes it was stupid gentleman agreement for the federation not to develop closing device of their own. Which from a strategic point of view is just plain stupid.

Yes the federation does she really stupid things don't they? :)

I think it's pretty safe to assume the cloaking device changed over the years.

:)

I seem to recall that it did in the movies, or maybe I am thinking about the Borg. Either way as I mentioned earlier, So it also stands to reason that whoever is next in line (probably that pale fellow/outcast dude) will create such changing signatures.

The defeat of the Klingons was also far too easy. Life sign masking technology we have never seen before or since. And yet those two sensors??? Couldn't they take along the low-noise version without the flashing disco lights? Might have been less conspicuous. The admiral is still alive but has been lying on the floor with two broken legs for how long now? And why was L'Rell hiding in there too? What was with the pile of bodies on the floor too? Too busy for funerals? Then the fight between Burnham and Kol. Why were they using short-Bat'leths? Why haven't we ever seen short-Bat'leths before?

Kol stole this ship from T'Kuvma, so Michael was in here before.

L'Rell wasn't hiding. She was condamed to death by Kol before Discovery made its appearance. All those bodies were from T'Kuvma's team.

I think the Klingon female has conditioned Tyler to some sort of action. Some clues: "I won't let them hurt you." (He's on a Federation ship), and "Soon."

Possible. She may still want to help the other klingon banned by Kol. Sorry, I forgot his name.

Do we know that they transferred the complete frequency? They could have acquired the frequency and once jumped did not transfer it completely to Starfleet, or rather they didn't even get the chance to and now the readings are corrupted by whatever damage happened to Discovery during the jump. Lots of ways to explain how Starfleet could still not have the capability to shoot down cloaked Klingon ships. If CBS cares about that and I'm not totally sure they do.

I can see two scenarios here:

1. Lorca not telling Starfleet everything

2. Lorca telling starfleet everything but goes crazy once he realizes what he sent to Starfleet was incomplete/didn't happen thus rendering his success a failure.

I'm not too bothered about the cloaking technology, as I said earlier (and also in some long thread discussion somewhere else here) there was a kind of arms race anyway between the Federation and Romulans/Klingons over cloaking technology. It is Romulan technology, which the Klingons bought?? and Starfleet stole. I agree the Treaty was a bad decision (the real reason was Roddenbery thought Starfleet would not sneak around.) Since the Romulans aren't around yet until Kirk meets them again, I'm not sure how that works with the Klingons having the cloak? But maybe they have met them?

We never had an explanation of how it worked until this episode, but I assumed it was bending EM radiation as the US Army is working on invisibility suits like that now (posted a news article here some years ago.) So, it was mentioned that their were still anomalies around the edges that could be detected - sounds feasible. The Klingons would improve the technology and get rid of them given time. The Excelsior was looking for gaseous anomalies and could detect exhaust gases from the Klingon ship - a totally different detection method.

Kol stole this ship from T'Kuvma, so Michael was in here before.

Still think they might meet someone in a corridor even if they knew the quickest way around.

My point was about the time - how long has the Admiral meant to have been prisoner? Surely, some weeks? Yet, she never spoke with L'Rell and those bodies were just left in a pile? Then when they break in through the door, the Admiral doesn't think to say, "Oh! By the way, we aren't alone, there is a female Klingon warrior over in the corner?" But, I was probably being overly critical. Maybe some scenes got edited out that would make it make sense.

And I think some of you have it wrong.

We know the Federation wins the war. But the Klingons haven't been defeated yet - only their (current) cloaking system. The Captain mentioned there was "a long way to go."

As far as defeating the Klingon ship "all too easily"? I recall another cloaked ship being easily destroyed, once discovered. (The Undiscovered Country).
And in Generations the scoutship belonging to the Dursa sisters was destroyed by one single torpedo, by forcing it to cloak. So this is entirely in keeping with what we've seen before. Also I'm assuming that after 130 jumps they've had plenty of time to identify the cruiser's (battleship?) weakpoints.

We all know the use of the spore-drive will be abandoned. It will probably be too much to ask for, but i would like the Undine to make an appearance. ( the subspace fungus is entirely in keeping with Fluidic space, bio-ships, etc.)
Perhaps the Shedai?

Chronologically speaking, the remains of Shedai technology were discovered around 2265, or this series is supposed to be in 2250s. I suppose they still can do a few episodes with the sentinels and nobody will really complain about them.

Voq. There is a compelling theory that Tyler is Voq, but surgically altered and reprogrammed as a sleeper agent. He just misremembers torture and surgical instruments
It would also neatly explain why L'rell seems to fawn over him.

I was given the impression that the admiral had only just woken up, because she says she can't feel her legs, like she only just found out.

It's a freezeframe moment, but Lorca had altered the coordinates for the last jump.

Is that freezeframe moment really from this episode or somewhere on internet ? I don't remember seeing it in the last episode.

I'm getting the strong impression that there is a lot of this episode lying on the cutting room floor. If the Admiral had been drugged, and had just woken up after months on ice, then that scene would certainly make a lot more sense. I'm not sure we are meant to examine every freeze-framed still in order to understand the plot, so maybe that screen shot was originally part of a longer scene. The inter-spacecraft battle and hand-to-hand battle would have been complicated and expensive to film, so they wouldn't have wanted to cut those. They could have extended the episode running time though.

So was just going to check it out on Netflix but I’m afraid one of my sons is watching animal mechanicals, and one of my daughters is watching Stranger things. I’ll check later.
