Expertise

Your post made me realize that my expertise as a steampunk comes from the fanatical side of the coin. I've talked with old members of the movement who were around during the 80's when its just a niche thing, and they told me I get it in its purist form.o_O People who just slap some gears on it and call it steampunk cause me to see red.:mad: There's a whole deeper meaning to it, it's not just 'Oh yeah I'll put some chimney sweeps with fancy gears on their 'eads in london. It'll be a great one mate!' Yeah please don't.

Heck I remember when their used to be factions of steampunkers. And for a while a bit of rivalry between them and the philosophies of lore.. which is funny because its all fictional things.

So if you want to talk to a steampunk zealot, furry, who almost becoming criminal. I'm down for that conversation.:lol:
 
Well, let's see. You can put me down for a working knowledge of casinos (poker room in particular), pet store things, radio DJing, newspaper printing, retail operations, and now a medical office although that's brand new and still dribbling in. Jack of all trades, master of ...bits. :D

I have a story where the main character is involved in a newspaper of a major city. I might want to pick your brain about the machinery used to print it. (y) Just curious to know a bit more about the presses used.:lol: Even though the story is technically smut I still want to at least get some knowledge of the equipment down so I can alter it. Maybe I should start looking through newsprinting patents.. Those always give good diagrams of old equipment.

One of my hobbies is collecting useless information! It's my true expertise!:D
 
Hey, just whaddaya mean by "old equipment"? :D I wasn't around for linotype or anything.

We had a Goss Community press, upgraded to a Goss Urbanite, and those do cold-set four-color (or b/w) web printing. You can google those to see if they fit your needs. I worked in the darkroom many moons ago, when the pictures still came in on rolls of film and were developed in canisters and printed on photo paper before being pasted into the pages for print, and later on when I went back to work for the paper the plate room was still using negatives of the pages and a light table to transfer them to the plates for the press. That went away pretty quickly, as we got computer-to-plate technology and eliminated the negatives.
 
Didn't mean any offense. I have a tendency to like reverse engineering things for my stories. o_O My brain just today came up with a steampunk CNC machine by using a steam powered end mill and the axis controls being controlled by punch cards (Like old computer programing cards) I figure if you had a barrel set up like an old player piano with different wheels reading the lines on the card you could have those correlate to the different motions. Simple parts would require a card, more complicated parts would require a series of cards or even a roll.:eek:

So you're the master of not answering questions!? You should be a politician! They claim to know everything, but know nothing at the same time! It's amazing! Schrödinger's knowledge at its finest!
 
On another forum I used to frequent, I started a "guide" thread consisting of links to all the main topics in whatever category. Such a thing could work well for this.
It could have links to those threads already mentioned (horses, quick fire questions, et cetera) and could be limited to posts with useful links only, to avoid it becoming overly swamped.
