As mentioned the other month, we thought we'd try something new so far as the inspiration images for the 300 Word Challenges are concerned. This quarter -- and perhaps the following quarters depending how this goes -- instead of the mods choosing the image, you lot will!

So here are four from which to choose. We've tried to get a spread of images to fit SF and fantasy and general indeterminate speculative fiction -- perhaps even a touch of horror! -- but, of course, whatever category we think each one might fill, it's up to you what you write as and when a winner is chosen.

When we mods choose an image, we try to guess which will generate the most entries and the most diversity of stories, so perhaps bear that in mind when voting. Or vote for the one that strongly suggests a story to you personally. Or just vote for your favourite image. The important thing is you vote! Vote even if you don't think you'll manage a story this quarter, or none of the images immediately inspire you -- your vote is important, so vote anyway. (And then try and write a story -- we want as many as we can get!)

As well as voting in the poll, feel free to natter here about the images or the forthcoming Challenge which will start on 1 July.

The poll will stay open until midnight GMT on June 28th -- ie the same time as voting in the 75 Worder, so you can't forget the date. As usual, the poll is open, so everyone will be able to see who voted and how.

A -- Industrial Cranes

B -- Tiger Mosaic

C -- Red Trees

D -- Fish Sculpture

For some reason I cannot see the images (using a Chromebook). I like the idea of letting us choose, though!

Neither can I when I'm logged out (I was checking this when you posted.)

(Note: this is my fault, not TJ's, and I'll try to rectify it ASAP.)

EDIT: You should be able to see it now. (I could see it when logged out.)

So others are not confused, I suspect that the appearance of post#6 (i.e. with the image there) is due to me making the image visible to all while Cat's Cradle was posting.

(It's either that or something rather spooky going on....)

Hah! Not the first time one of my posts have caused confusion. Cool pics, thanks for fixing this, UM!

Thanks for sorting things out, Ursa! (Regular readers will know I'm a complete techno-idiot, so Ursa has had to do all the work in connection with the images, including the marvellous grouping of the text.)

Not spooky, it seems (as I can't see the image in post#6 when I'm logged out).

The software obviously allows someone who cannot see an image to have that image in a quote, so that when I saw the picture, what was happening was exactly the same as the original problem: mods can see some** images that ordinary users can't.

** - The effect is the result of me copy-pasting an image from a thread that only mods can see. (The original image was uploaded to that thread.) Copy and paste merely pastes the label of the original (uploaded) attachment, not the image itself. It obviously continues to use the access permissions of the thread to which the original was uploaded, rather than those of the destination thread.

Interesting pictures to choose from.

Industrial Cranes:
This picture was a close second for me. It is completely different from the last challenge's picture, and relatively open ended, but it didn't quite scream out for a story to be told (at least not to my drowsy, pre-tea brain).

Tiger Mosaic:
Like the cranes, this one is completely different from the last challenge, though this one does seem to have a story to be told. However, I felt that it would cut down variety of stories, as it seems to naturally lead to predator/prey themes.

Red Trees:
While this image has a fair bit of potential, I felt this one was too similar to the last challenge.

Fish Sculpture:
I felt this picture met my criteria the best. I see half a dozen different themes and several genres this could inspire, and it is completely different from the previous challenge. This got my vote.

Red trees can mean so much to so many, or so few.
Also they are a convenient thing for cats to hide behind :)

I could see the potential for all of the pictures. My brain, however, seems to have fallen asleep because it just couldn't stretch enough for the tiger. My apologies for those who love tigers though.

I didn't expect this to be so hard. The tiger has this look of helplessness, like he can't help his own actions, but I agree that it seems kind of restrictive. I love the fish, but We have had a lot of fishy, water related images lately. (2 in the last year)

The trees are my runner up. I only dislike them because I think I'll read a lot of stories about bloody trees, and I'm not super into horror.

So the cranes win. So much possibility. Stories about building, about machinery. What planet are they on? Who is running them? Are they alive?
