The Phantom Menace , Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith? How would you rate them in terms of story telling, direction, production characterization, acting ,……. ? Do you think they're, good , bad or indifferent.

Thoughts? :)

Ohhhh, such a contentious subject.

Personally, I like them. They're not as good as the OT, but they are enjoyable movies, none the less.

The acting, especially in TPM was wooden, but in a movie with as much green screen as this, I figure that it may be difficult to act in front of a tennis ball for any length of time. Excellent pod race and excellent lightsaber duel.

Attack Of The Clones was the weakest in my opinion, but only because of the aweful love story.

Revenge of the Sith was okay, but I didn't like all of the posturing that went on for the final lightsaber duel.

I'm also one of the few that had no objection to Jar Jar Binks. Yes, he was annoying, but he was there for the kids and other loved him.

Special effect, sound and music where all excellent, as was the design.

Overall, I do enjoy them. They're not excellent, but they are good.

The spaceship design was weak and derivative. Anakin and Padme's acting poor. The CGI was plasticy. The use of A-list actors distracting. And Padme dying doesn't fit with what Leia said about her mother, so the continuity wasn't even very good. And, all the Jedi were dressed in Tattooine robes rather than the black Jedi costume that Luke sports in Return of the Jedi.

Seconded.

Why do you wish to know what our thoughts about the prequels are right now, Baylor, bearing in mind the volume of posts in the SW forums you could resurrect?

Normally, I would have resurrected a thread. But For some reason , it just didn't occur to me .

There were some bits that I liked about AOTC. I loved the designs of the Kaminoans. The Geonosis set piece was pretty decent and I loved the sound of the seismic bombs in the asteroid field.

I didn't hate the Phantom Menace, but I did feel distinctly underwhelmed. I barely remember Attack of the Clones. Revenge of the Sith was OK. Ish.

Total rubbish to me I'm afraid. I'm generally quite easily pleased, but these were just plain bad. All the reasons above, plus Jar Jar Binks. Just wow. R2D2's super mario scene (he can fly? Really?) Bad acting on many parts. Bad scripting.
I liked Liam Neeson, because, well, Liam Neeson, and Darth Maul. Thats it I'm afraid.

I watched The Phantom Menace and was so disappointed with, well, everything that I still haven't watched the other two.

Not quite. In Return of the Jedi at the end when Luke has a vision of Anakin, Obi-Wan and Yoda they are all wearing the Tattooine robes.

There is nothing wrong with the general storyline, about how everything went wrong and the empire came to be. I pesonally would have loved to see the order of the Jedi become split and corrupted, it would have given a better balance to the dark side, story wise. George Lucas is not a great director, I blame him for the poor acting mainly. I agree with the other points bought up here, the end result is underwhelming.

The star wars prequels are probably some of the best movies on political social commentary around. The perfect framework for how democracy fails and empires rise up. As a political geek, they hold a special place in my heart. Oh, and I'm one of the very few members of the Jar Jar Binks fan club. I actually liked the whole Gungan story-line. The new movies do not live up.

An interesting point of view.

I often see these movies get quoted the most out of all of them, especially in political squabbles so it boggles the mind why there is almost universal hatred towards them. I think the original series and the new movies are a bit too childish, in comparison, but I have high hopes for the last jedi after seeing the trailer.

I completely agree on the political social commentary part, these are well written scripts with great plots. I think the films fall down in the execution - I find many of the scenes cringeworthy because the actors aren't even there. Most animations are more engaging.

Those big spenders need to understand that special effects can never carry a narrative. I don't mind them being childish though... Bring on the inner child. :)

+1 !

I loved the prequels although AOTCs was my least favourite. And I'm also a Jar Jar fan.

I have two things I dislike (hate) about them: C-3PO's super-articulation and comedy routine in the droid foundry, just...no; and the incredibly ill-advised racial stereotyping (clumsy, happy Caribbean Gungans with patois language, Techno-advanced Asians. Really??)

I've watched the three of them countless times. I was so disappointed with The Phantom Menace, even the title. The pod racing part was too protracted for me. There could've been countless less boring ways to introduce Anakin's insinuated gifts without turning the movie into a futuristic car chase.

The next two, after watching them numerous times, grew on me to the point where I actually liked them.

Anakin's temporary demise at the behest of Obi Wan in the third movie was probably the scene that brought the series to a fitting conclusion, although Vader acting like a Mary Shelley creation failed the ending.

Nevertheless, The Force Awakens was theatrically head and shoulders above all three of them, and that's not era snobbery. Lucas made the best of what he had with regards to CGI during the original sagas, and made a ground-breaking job of it, but was too ambitious in the prequels with the technology of the day.

Perhaps the series reflects the evolution of cinema.

Glad to see another fan here. ATOC was really boring, but if you watch the battle scenes there is a lot going on there in the background. The new movies barley scratches the surface of those battles. Though I did like seeing how the clones were made and where Qui-gons search ended up. Really showcased the young jedi and made you care for them later when Anakin slaughtered them all.

Though, to be fair about your point with the droids, If I understand you correctly. The droids were always the comic relief, though not so much in Rogue One. The droids were the first thing on screen in the entire universe and in the first opening act we are introduced to star wars through their eyes as they stumble through the station and land on tatooine for the first time. I suspect Lucas was trying to give that some type of homage which can of course never again be recreated. Though they did introduce BB-8 pretty well.
