Star Trek: Discovery - new series in 2017

Really? Mine weren't that high, especially after reading posts in this thread, however the cast of unknown but capable actors, and the fact it is actually still going ahead, means that there must be some hope. If it fails then I expect that will be the final death of Star Trek on TV. I would agree with those of you asking why it couldn't be set in the far future, however, there seems to be quite a lot of Klingons in the cast, and, apart from a couple of episodes and a film, we never really saw the inside of a Klingon ship.

Star Trek VI had gave us a pretty good grasp about the Klingon Ships and how they operate. Then there was Star Trek IV where Kirk and crew had the bird of prey instead of the Enterprise. But technically speaking we've only really seen two types of Klingon ships if that's what you meant.

Yes, there was The Undiscovered Country one, and the one Riker did a job-swap with. We saw plenty of others, in DS9 and Enterprise, and even in the original TV series, but not how the crew really worked on board. (I had forgotten about The Voyage Home Bird of Prey - how could I forget that?) I have no idea about the premise of this series, but a closer look inside a Klingon ship would be interesting. However, I think that almost everything that could be done with Trek has been done once. The new film franchise is action-packed and thrilling, but it isn't Star Trek. It is just characters with the same names doing similar things with an occasional homage thrown in. I'll keep an open mind but I don't want more of that. I'll watch it. I've watched some other TV that it couldn't possibly be worse than this.

This doesn't seem to have the same feeling as the JJ movies. It might go back more to the Original Series than any other, but I think this is meant to be darker and grittier like the Expanse. At least that's what I've been hearing and that's probably why we have more Klingons and what looks like a double or triple ship cast. Since the Klingons are main characters and all. If we have some gritty fights with the Klingons I'll be happy.

You can do new stuff with that that you couldn't do in the 60s or even in Star Trek VI and there weren't many fights in Star Trek VI. It wasn't supposed to have that many fights. It was more diplomatic. Even the new movies have poor Klingon exposure as did Enterprise.

Instead what I would hope for is a storyline like First Contact which could work well for the first season of this show. Except replace borg with Klingons. A basic military Star Trek thriller like that where Klingons are everywhere and the federation has to work to destroy them, is something that hasn't really ever been done. It can be used to show us why the Klingons are a force to be reckoned with, instead of just tough guys with silly heads, and swords.

It was just established that the Klingons are the bad guys but usually Kirk just happened to run into a couple of ships and had to blow them up. It wasn't like what Picard had to deal with with the Borg and their army. That was brute tactical force through and through with a little time travel built in. Perfect. Though my praise for First Contact is high, Star Trek VI was probably my overall favorite. Though it can't and shouldn't be done again. Especially considering when this series takes place.

Your idea sounds like something I'd watch. Enterprise already had first contact with Klingons in Broken Bow, but not the period of open hostility or strained relations that was seen in some of the original series.

To me Broken Bow was a cheap tease. Not on same level as First Contact at all. TNG probably featured the most Klingon culture but it was biased through Worf's eyes. It's clear most Klingons didn't even like Worf and considered him a traitor. That would be cool to re-establish what it means to be a true Klingon without that Klingon wanting to be part of the federation.

I just wish Star Trek would stop looking backwards, and instead have a series to follow on from after the events of DS9. Trek suffers enough with continuity problems without introducing more by constantly revisiting the past.

Star Trek Discovery was supposed to air this month. There is still no teaser, no trailer and no footage and no news on when to expect something. The only picture they are using is Sasha from her on set Walking Dead photos. Kinda sad :( I have my doubts this will air in May.

I'm hoping it doesn't. A delay of another few months would give them time to make sure it's done right!

They have to be careful because as per a contract with Paramount they can't overlap the series with Star Trek 4 which I assume is starting sometime in 2018. It's part of the reason why JJ Abrams quit. He wanted to create a Star Trek Cinematic Universe with his characters.

I wish Abrahams had been able to do that. I would have prefer it to Discovery.

It might end up not happening at all.
