Thank you very much for the votes and lovely mentions. I'm delighted to have won in such a strong month with so many brilliant stories. And now to come up with something truly awful uh inspiring for November (Meditations on Nanowrimo in the style of Oscar Wilde...?)

@Starbeast .... Recently I was reminded of the classis Heinlein book "Starbeast." Is that where you got your name from?


When I was a kid I read a Juvenal S.F. about a family who lived on a space ship and traveled throughout the solar system. One of the chief sources of living income was a television series for which "Granny" wrote the script. I still remember a line. Their ship had made it to one of the moons of Jupiter and they were debating further travels or settling down. The family makes the decision to head toward the Ort Cloud and Granny says: "I'd better start pushing gore. Has anyone seen the price of single H here?" --- This gave me the idea of a ship stuck on a dry planet and an author who would need to come up with a story if they were to move on.
 
Congratulations to Hex. One of my favourites so I wasn't surprised it was a winner. Evocative and creepy in equal measure.

Thank you for the all the mentions and short lists. A vote too, even! More than I was expecting, certainly.

I hope the inspiration for my entry was pretty obvious. It developed from thinking of the phrase 'I've been dry for x days' and built from there. As I mentioned previously, frustratingly, I thought of ways to improve it after submitting. If I could change anything, I'd re-work Lucretia's language a little to be more archaic, to add a touch more flavour to her narration.

No. I got it from the original title of the 1979 movie, ALIEN. I joined the two words together. Like: STARFOX, and STARHAWK, of Marvel Comics.
