Just got my contributor's copy of BLACK WINGS III from PS Publishing. I've been acing for this book to be publish'd because I think my contribution to it is remarkable, not due to my efforts but to the GENIUS of my co-author, Jessica Amanda Salmonson, who took a typical Pugmire story and turned it into something rich and rare and magnificent. Happily, I will be dining with the book's editor to-night, and then we go to his pad to signye signature sheets for SEARCHERS AFTER HORROR -- & I will have him sign my copy of BLACK WINGS III! I love this series, and will have a tale of Lovecraft's Kingsport in BLACK WINGS IV.

Thanks to the efforts of S. T., I have ye honour of becoming part of the forthcoming series of LOVECRAFT ILLUSTRATED from PS Publishing. Artist and creator of the series, Pete Von Sholly, sent me an email saying that S. T. suggested I be asked to write a wee essay for either THE COLOUR OUT OF SPACE or THE CALL OF CTHULHU volume. I immediately wrote a new essay on "Colour." S. T. then sent Pete one of my old "Lustcraft" columns from TALES OF LOVECRAFTIAN HORROR, and that will appear in THE DUNWICH HORROR volume of LOVECRAFT ILLUSTRATED. Just this morning I polished a new essay of 1,500 words concerning "The Call of Cthulhu" for that illustrated volume in ye series. It's been quite a while since Ihave so concentrated on writing about Lovecraft's fiction, and although I shall never succeed in posing as any kind of Lovecraftian scholar, I really enjoy'd writing these new essays. The first volume in the series, THE DREAM-QUEST OF UNKNOWN KADATH, will hopefully appear this month.

Other news is that Hippocampus Press has announced that the volumes in THE VARIORUM LOVECRAFT will have first editions in hardcover! No price has yet been set.

According to David Schultz' latest apazine, the next letters volume will not be the HPL/CAS correspondence, but rather Letters to Robert Bloch and Others.

Pity it won't be the HPL/CAS volume, but the letters to Bloch have long deserved a more permanent sort of binding, I think. I probably shouldn't ask this at this point, but... who are the "others" mentioned? Searight, I would think; Kuttner and perhaps the contents of the Starrett and Loveman volume as well? Or are we going for letters which have not been previously collected (save for the Bloch correspondence)?

The theme of this volume is "youthful associates, admirers, would be writers and publishers", so the others will be Natalie H. Wooley, Kenneth Sterling, Willis Conover, Donald Wollheim, Wilson Shepherd, and William Frederick Anger.

Next after that? Well, Baldwin/Rimel would be easier, but perhaps it will be Clark Ashton Smith. Too early to say, and first things first. There must be at least another 10 volumes to edit: Clark/Gamwell (3), Moe, Long, late amateurs, &c.

Ah, now that will be very interesting... and a rather broad range covered there. Let's see... there are only 11 letters to Wooley in the SL volumes; 4 to Sterling; 8 to Conover; and 6 to Anger; while I don't believe there are any to Wollheim or Shepherd. And of course several of those listed are severely abridged. It will also be very interesting to read the Conover letters this way, rather than in the "conversational" mode he chose to use in Lovecraft at Last... a wonderful book, to be sure, and one of the most moving tributes to a friend I've come across; but as far as following HPL's arguments on various topics, a bit diffuse.

Glad, too, to see the Clark/Gamwell correspondence will be given so much space; as these are his most intimate relations, the candid and broad view of HPL given by these will be of tremendous interest; and his debates with Moe, particularly on religion, should be very, very good.

By the way... on the subject of the letters to Long -- am I remembering correctly that a good many of those were long thought to be lost, but have since resurfaced? If so, I'm assuming that these are available to be used in the project....

I bloody well hope so! These would be among the most important of his letters, in many ways; for them to not be more widely available, would be a tremendous loss....

PS Publishing has announced that they will be bringing out THREE ADDITIONAL VOLUMES of their fabulous LOVECRAFT ILLUSTRATED series:
THE MOUND, THE THING ON THE DOORSTEP, and THE HAUNTER OF THE DARK. Each volume will be profusely and colourfully illustrated by Pete Von Sholly and include new Introductions by editor S. T. Joshi, whose definitive texts will be used. I suspect, as in previous volumes, there will be an assortment of essays, old and new, following the story--and I have a wee hope that perhaps I may be invited to write a wee 1,000 words for ye "Haunter of the Dark" volume, as that is my fave Lovecraft tale. I am especially happy to see that "The Mound" is being included, for although publish'd as a revision, it is one of Lovecvraft's moft interesting (if not entirely successful) efforts.

The Annotated Fungi from Yuggoth seems to have slipped another month and will now be a May release: Fungi from Yuggoth by H. P. Lovecraft: An Annotated Edition : Hippocampus Press, specializes in classic horror and science fiction (it still says "April" on the Hipcamp front page, but the page for the book itself says "May 2016").

A hardcover edition of THE COMPLETE CTHULHU MYTHOS STORIES will be poublish'd at month's end by Barnes & Noble. The photos I have seen of it are impressive, and John Coulhart (who is the book's artist) has supplied some captivating hints about what will be contain'd therein.

"...among the extra features there's an introduction by Lovecraft scholar S. T. Joshi, my drawing of R'lyeh on the endpapers, and...a poster reproduction of my Cthulhu Rising picture." John also writes that it is "...a collection of 23 weird tales by H. P. Lovecraft (some of which are collaboration with other writers) published by Barnes & Noble in their leatherbound Collectible Editions series. Anyone who's held one of these volumes will know that they deserve to be called tomes rather than mere books; they're heavy and lavishly produced, with detailed designs embossed on the front and back boards in a variety of metallic inks."

A trade pb edition of the book was publish'd in, I believe, 2013. The stories to be included are:

All in all, this is going to be a very handsome hardcover edition of Lovecraft, and will "hold us over" until our eyes can devour ye splendor of Leslie Klinger's THE NEW ANNOTATED H. P. LOVECRAFT: BEYOND THE MYTHOS, forthcoming from Liveright/Norton in, hopefully, 2017.

S. T. just sent ye pdf file for BLACK WINGS V--and it is a fabulous volume! I was a bit disappointed in my own story upon re-reading it, but I continue to be overjoy'd to have new work in this series. I suspect ye volume will be out near ye end of this year.

That late? That's disappointing. I gathered from a PS Publishing newsletter a while back that they were working on it now, so that its appearance was soonish.
