Some details are emerging so I figured this deserves it's own thread now...

TVLine got their hands on the details, which give a sense for the first group of survivors we're likely to meet in the series' pilot. At least in this iteration, it looks like the pilot will be fairly family-focused, with five of the six characters belonging to one of two families, one headed by a single-mom and one by a single dad:

SEAN CABRERA | A Latino male in his early 40s, Sean is a good man trying to do right by everyone in his life.

CODY CABRERA | Sean’s whip-smart and rebellious teenage son. Known as the angriest kid in town.

NANCY TOMPKINS | A thirtysomething single mom to two kids, Nancy looks like the girl next door, but there’s an edge to her.

NICK TOMPKINS | Nancy’s screwed up teenage son. He’s too old to stay home, too scared to flee.

ASHLEY TOMPKINS | Nancy’s mostly level-headed teenage daughter. Her ambition is in direct proportion to her older brother’s failures. She loves her mom but it’s time to get out of Dodge.

ANDREA CHAPMAN | A somewhat wilted flower child, fortysomething Andrea — yep, another Andrea! — has retreated to the outskirts of the city to recover after a horrible marriage.

It was confirmed that the companion series will be set in... LA..

I'm a little underwhelmed as I was hoping for something a bit different. The LA climate is fairly similar to Georgia - hot and sweaty!

will focus on the early stages of the apocalypse when nobody knows what's going on

There has been speculation that certain CDC doctor will appear in this one before he gets locked into the Atlanta's HQ basement with nothing but an AI as companion and plenty of material to study. So I'm looking forward to see how this one develops as I've written quite a bit about same kind of thing in the First Interview.

No confirmed date for the spin-off series yet :)

But the main event is upon us!!

That's interesting.. but Kirkman has said he wasn't a fan of the CDC stuff so I'd be a little surprised if this is the case. But you never know!

I heard something about one of the spin-off characters showing up in the 2nd half of S5 of the main show. Not sure how that'd work given how far ahead of the alleged spin-off timeline TWD is?

He might have not liked it but it doesn't mean he wouldn't see true potential, especially as the show is allegedly going to show small outbreak turning to worldwide epidemic.

I wouldn't put my money on it. And you know that we cannot talk about the latter half characters at all. But it will surely be interesting if one of them would turn up in both shows.

Something in the third series put us at eight months to find the prison, add a couple to get to the start of the fourth series, maybe a month over the course of the fourth and fifth series - I guess we're close to a year after the initial outbreak. It's not an impossibility that someone in the L.A. could make it across America to Washington in the span of a year if they keep moving.

Anyway, teaser!

Fear the Walking Dead, coming Summer 2015.

Sixteen months in total at the main series.

Seriously, that long? Wow. I'm guessing most of what I missed exists between the end of the third series and the start of the fourth, with the trip to Washington taking up the rest.

I think there was a time jump at the start of season 3 before they find the prison, and also one at the start of season 4 after the Woodbury folk move in.

Carl's real-life aging makes it seem like about 4 years have passed though!

I expect this to be the crown jewel of my summer TV schedule. No word yet on the start date?

Hey, AMC! “Summer” officially arrives at 9:39 a.m. (that's LA time) Sunday, June 21 (hint, hint)

It's very summer like in London, but the way you describe the temperature it almost sounds like the winter hasn't moved. You are not by any chance in Island, are you?

Have you been wondering what to expect from Fear The Walking Dead? You're not alone. We've known for a while that it is a prequel set in LA, beginning while Rick is in his coma, but beyond that we didn't know much at all.

That is, until Dave Erickson (Fear The Walking Dead showrunner, Sons Of Anarchy alum), chatted to The Hollywood Reporter and cleared a few things up.

Here are some highlights from the interview...

It will indeed be set during Rick's coma, but don't call it a prequel: "We are loosely covering the period of time that [The Walking Dead's] Rick (Andrew Lincoln) was in his coma in season one. We're able to watch and experience the things that he missed. It's more of a parallel story than a prequel; imagine the opening where Rick gets shot and goes in his coma — that day was probably very close to our day one."

It's about people, so don't expect an explanation of the virus: "I had a couple of early pitches that touched on what you're referring to and Robert [Kirkman, the creator of The Walking Dead comics, and a key creative force during its TV adaptation) shut me down. For him, it's never been about what caused it; it's always been about the impact it has on people."

Don't expect too much government or disease control stuff, either: "Robert very poignantly said that he likes to avoid the CDC [Centre For Disease Control] perspective, the FEMA [Federal Emergency Management Agency] perspective, at least moving forward. It's something I agree with; we'll never tell the story from the perspective of the bureaucrats, politicians and generals who are all trying to contain it. It will always be from the ground level looking up."

There won't be a crossover any time soon, if at all:"I think logistically, it would be very difficult. There's no plan for a crossover. I never considered seeing that in some way, shape or form; that show has been going on for five years since the original outbreak and we're just in the infancy [of the outbreak]. There are no plans to do so but I do think that's a world that could be explored at some point."

There could be a lot of seasons: "[I see this as] about five or six [seasons]. The more we dig into it, the more we'll find. The original show is at least another few seasons based on the material that Robert has written for the comic already, and that serves as a guiding light. I like endings, and — I haven't discussed this with Robert but I think it's more of a question for us to discuss when we sit down and really start breaking season two."

Villains - a la the Governor - will not be the focus: "No. The goal for us — it's not difference for difference's sake because it works beautifully on The Walking Dead and Sons [Of Anarchy] was very similar: we introduced a new villain each season and that became the main rail. What's interesting to me is to try to internalize it as much as possible."
