I had this conversation with my Dad years ago. Our conclusion was that Alec Guiness was the best Doctor that never was.

By the way, no one is allowed to say Cumberbatch because he was offered the role before Matt Smith, and he turned it down. That's when Moffat offered him Sherlock instead. The rest, as the say, is history.

But three of the last six doctors have been Scots actors. Craig Charles is another I think might make an interesting doctor.

See, I'm not a misogynist or anything, but I don't like the idea of time Lord's changing gender. It would be like casting sylvester stallone as Cathy in Wuthering Heights or Arnie as Elizabeth Bennett. It's weird. (I'll talk about Michelle Gomez another time.)

Chiwetel Ejiofor I am utterly certain would play it brilliantly, but I'm not sure he could do a British accent. For the same reason I personally would reject Christopher Lloyd, Morgan Freeman and Geoff Goldblum. Otherwise perfect.

Idris Elba or David O-yellow-o (I forget the right spelling) anyone?

I've just looked up Craig Maclachlan and the Dr Blake mysteries and yes I'll accept he certainly looks the part, though I'll reserve my personal judgement till I see an episode. I was just seeing the long perm he had in Neighbours!

Peter MacNicol I think would be an ok Doctor, I just can't see him being 'great'.

And that is in the assumption that they both could do a convincing British accent. Convincing to an actual Brit that is. The Doctor should always be British. Always.

You've missed the Dr Blake Mysteries - they were on a few weeks back tucked away in the BBC schedules at 2.15pm on a weekday afternoon. It'll be on next year. He was in Bugs as well. If we take it back bit then the Doctor could be British with an Australian Accent.

I have great belief that Peter MacNicol can make any part great. He was even a fantastic evil elf in an obscure film called Ski Patrol (not the porn movie)....

Liam Neeson. Just so that I can watch him every week. Sorry. Lowering the tone... :D

Oooh, but yes. Not his kind of role, I am afraid, but one can fantasize.

I liked David Morrissey, and was sorry that he turned out not to be the Doctor. I think he would have brought something interesting to the role.

The fact that I find him easy on the eyes, too, would just have been a bonus.

Well, no it wouldn't. Cathy is a female character. The doctor is a shifting character. The timelord-female possiblity has already been established in my understanding by the Master. It's okay not to fancy a female doctor, but to use an analogy to two unchanging, non-shape shifting, characters isn't a strong one. Sorry.
