Books where character is cut off from "collective consciousness"

More Than Human (Theodore Sturgeon) certainly meets the "collective consciousness criteria, even if the plot doesn't meet the other requirement. Its still a fascinating read!

In a way, you can find a reference to a "Collective Consciousness" in Asimov's "Foundation's Edge" and while there is a character that is (somewhat) removed from it, she is not the main character in the book. Also it is inferred that the Mule may have also been a part of Gaia (the collective).

It's kind impossible to forget 7of9... she is the extremely hot member of the crew.

Why ANYBODY would want to wife swap her just shows me that all pols must be crazy

Another Borg/Star Trek thing is Hugh, a Borg they capture and give an individuality to. Like 3 episodes, I think. The first where he goes back to the Borg but as an individual, and the second two where he escapes with a shipload he's infected with individualty and then they run into Lore, who convinces them he is God.

Slan AE van Vogt. Sort of inverse of the OPs requirement, with a psychic mutant not realising that there are others like him until he is an adult.
