Any ideas on this book

I read a book in the late 70's early 80's.
It was about the future - Polar icecaps melted by aliens, people living on ships.
There were genetically engineered dolphins that were originally made to fight the aliens but were now enemies of remaining humans but then became friends again.
I know this sounds like waterworld but that is not it.

I would guess this might be a half-remembered version of David Brin's "Startide Rising". See the summary on Wikipedia, involving a water world and mutinous dolphins.

That is not it. The dolphins(?) in the one I am thinking of were not super intelligent, just enough that they could be trained. They were supposed to fight the aliens but I don't think the aliens were ever introduced in the book. If people fell from ships they would be attacked by them. The here was kind of a pirate guy who somehow made friends with the them.
