Redshirts by John Scalzi

has anyone read this? if so, what did you think?

i thought the idea was great--poking fun at some of the ridiculousness of Star Trek--and it was really funny at times, but it also felt a bit one-dimensional to me as well. ....

Yes,I managed to read a used copy of it. It is one-dimensonal and not worth what the full price would be for it, in my opinion. This author had such great potential with his Old Man's War series even if it too was highly derivitative of all that came before. Most books since then had gone down in quality and originality.

I tried reading his blog as well but found him arrogant and the comment section filled with what I would compare to teenage girls going ape over the beatles. Sort of pathetic in my opinion.

I love his blog...it's a lot of fun to read and he's got a lot of interesting things to say. Also love the OMW series, which to me hit the right balance between homage and satire of stuff like Heinlein.

Redshirts, though, did feel too one-dimensional to me as well. Maybe it's just because I'm not a huge fan of that particular type of humor? The whole time I kept thinking "Oh, so-and-so would love this," which then made me think about the fact that I'm not so-and-so.
