Very soon, the month of November will fall upon our heads and then we should all be busy writing. Those of you who fondly remember last year's nanowrimo thread will understand me completely. For everyone else, here's the scoop.

National Novel Writing Month is a yearly event occurring in November designed to encourage writers to finally write that manuscript that's been bugging them for ages (or the last five minutes, your choice). This handy link explains everything a lot better than I ever could.

So, who's in, who's out, who's shakin it all about?

C'mon Cul, you know you want to.

I'm good at helping people write more than they thought. Last year I convinced someone to try it and they got to halfway, which was pretty good for her.

50,000 words.

I wouldn't even know what to write that could stay at 50,000 words at the finish. It sounds intense though, something I would totally love doing. Unfortunately I'd be forever wondering what I could have accomplished had I not kept it so short.

I'm pretty sure, although don't quote me on this, that you can still write past that limit. I think their goal is 50,000 words, but that shouldn't prevent you from going past that if your goal is different.

This is the first year that I'll be taking it seriously, so I'm really excited for this one.

You are correct, wrimos have been known to exceed 1/2 a million words.

I've signed up but since I don't have a great deal of writing time (leaving the house in the evenings to talk to other writers?! HA! I don't think so) I'm not expecting to get to 50,000 words. It'll hopefully give me a good start, though. Feel free to kick me every so often.

Can I kick you now?

You don't have to leave the house to be a wrimo. The would discriminate against agoraphobics.

Go on then. I'm sure there's something more important I should be doing.

Do I get to kick you back or isn't that part of the rules?

I did it last year, and succeeded, but no time (or inspiration) for it this year. Maybe next!

I did it last year think it finished at 75,000 words and I did the camp in July but didn't quite finish because I decided to start the rewrite earlier.

Trying to decide between a murder mystery my detectives are on honeymoon or an elderly couple of paranormal detectives.

Whoa!

75000 words.

What happened to them?

And there's a camp?

Wonders never cease.

Still it's nice to see they are spending all those sponsorships on free writing weeks for the faithful. Maybe I've misjudged them after all.

Not for me, thanks !!

I'm ~120k and 44 'days' into my current tale, dare not be distracted by a new project-- Especially since I almost stopped writing during the Summer, and had to repeatedly rip up most of the little I did write...

Hmm do I detect an undercurrent lol ;) ?

It's kind of a cheat for me :D I write NaNo style anyway - blast through a first draft, bin draft rewrite draft - repeat until happy enough with story to edit. For me it works well because it is the kick up the bum to get the first draft done. 75K takes me less than 20 days when I am working at full steam - less if I can palm the kids off to grandparents for a few days.

Socrates' Children (last year's NaNo) has been rewritten a few times (and is now around 120K), but needs me to get a prologue/epilogue combination right before it is complete and ready for final edit.

Sour Cream is a detective story based why the nine of diamonds is called the Curse of Scotland from July's camp has had one rewrite, but needs at least one more as I have changed the narrator to the main character's imaginary dog. (my detectives are kind of Hardy Boys for grown-ups except they are definitely not brothers).

One Night Stand from August's only got 20K in as I got sick, then so did kids, but it is looking really good I am excited about it. It may work better as a script though. It is about a paranormal detectiving elderly couple and their grandson. Involves posession by a ancient Incan spirit translplanted to Birmingham in England.

I want to use November to write the sequel to one of the camps -- Socrates' Children was a book set 130 years after my first book Mayhem and was really productive as it gave depth to Mayhem's rewrites. The other alternative is to have a bit of fun (which was what Socrates' Children was until I killed the children) and write the love story between Alice in Wonderland and Merlin. Which would come out of last years story.

Yup, I'm planning on NaNo again this year, although I'm not sure what it will be yet. I wrote my 50,000 words last year (which were not rubbish, TYVM), but I haven't gotten around to finishing that one yet. I'm debating continuing it for this year, but I also have a glimmering of a totally different idea that might take over instead. It's not November yet!

On an equally important and somewhat related note, I finished the VSNAP* two days early and have it ready to mail! A little of anything done every day yields awesome results. :D
