Why does he have a long tongue, and they have long ears.

The reason for the tongue was shown, it helps him steal food. The ears seem good for nothing. As they seem to be an amphibious species, I would think that they would actually get in the way of swimming.

I have a question: The fans of the original trilogy, like me, generally don't think much of the character of Jar Jar Binks. Newer younger fans, like Yoda, don't have such a problem with him, and I have already begun to accept him as a part of the Star Wars mythology.

So, do you think that, with time, everyone will mellow to Jar Jar?

Long before galactic strife enveloped his native Naboo, Jar Jar Binks was exiled from the underwater city of Otoh Gunga. His main sin: being clumsy in front of the head of his clan. To hear Jar Jar tell it in his Gungan/Basic pidgin, he "boomed da gasser, and crashed de boss's heyblibber, den banished."
An outcast, the Gungan spent his time in the Naboo swampland, surviving on raw shellfish or just about anything else that the murky ecosystem had to offer. Jar Jar's fate took a twist when the hapless Gungan encountered a pair of Jedi as they eluded enemy forces during the Trade Federation invasion of Naboo.

By Gungan tradition, Jar Jar found himself indebted to Qui-Gon Jinn for saving his life. Jar Jar guided the Jedi to the underwater city of Otoh Gunga, where they secured transport to the Naboo capital of Theed. Jar Jar braved the "nocombackie law" to present Qui-Gon to the Gungan leader, Boss Nass, even though he risked the consequence of being "pounded" to death.

Throughout the adventure of liberating Naboo, Jar Jar tagged along with Qui-Gon. Although his bungling, haphazard mannerisms constantly landed him in hot water, his good nature and loyalty somehow helped him triumph in the end.

Queen Amidala requested that Jar Jar make contact with the Gungans. With Jar Jar's help, the Naboo and the Gungans forged an alliance that liberated the besieged world of Naboo. During the ground battle against the mechanized armies of the Trade Federation, Jar Jar was made a general in the Gungan Grand Army. After the battle, Jar Jar continued to ascend in Gungan society, putting his awkward past as an outcast behind him.

Jar Jar eventually became a Senior Representative for Naboo, serving alongside Padmé Amidala in the Galactic Senate. While his compassion spoke volumes of the quality of his character, his inherent gullibility and trusting nature were easily exploited by the less scrupulous in the field of politics. For many, Jar Jar was but a joke, the subject of derision, but in the corrupt inner confines of Senate, his lanky frame stood as a rare example of non-corrupt politician interested only in the greater good of the Republic and his people.

Jar Jar was a member of the Loyalist Committee, a panel of Senators concerned with countering the increasing threat of a Separatist movement spreading throughout the galaxy. He and Padmé worked hard, favoring negotiation and peaceful resolution over the growing popularity of the Military Creation Act. While Padmé was away from Coruscant, it was Jar Jar who took her place in the Senate.

I'm 21, so I guess I'm one of the new and younger fans of the Star Wars series. And I must admit, I enjoy watching the prequel trilogy more than I enjoy watching the original movies. I do think however that Jar Jar Binks is the most annoying and worthless character I've seen throughout the entire Star Wars saga. I accept the Gungans as a part of the Star Wars universe, but I do try to ignore Jar Jar Binks as much as I can possibly do. Stupid, clumsy and not even funny. What a waste of money and special effects.

Jar Jar Binks now in storage

Problem solved, no more sequels for him.

Wow, no verbal torches and pitchforks by the masses when Jar-Jar is mentioned? I'm pleasantly shocked. He's not my favorite character (although my Mom likes him a lot ), but I'm somewhat fond of him. I grew up with the originals and I know how hard it is to have lightning strike twice with the humor and charm that R2 & 3PO had. I just can't help but compare his lanky, awkward, clumsy, mouth-in-foot, always trying to help characteristics to my own. And for that he will always be endearing to me. I do like his part in the Clone Wars show, too. Jedi, where's da Jedi? Funny stuff.

Jar Jar's an abomination. If the Galactic Empire ended up killing him then the fall of the Republic was a price worth paying :p

I've not seen the last prequel film yet, but the first two did not measure up to the original series. Qui-Gon's special skill seems to be being rubbish, and Obi-wan Kenobi has all the charisma of a plank of wood. Anakin shifts from being an annoying twerp in episode 1 to a tedious, stroppy twerp in episode 2.

Still, I did like Mace Windu, the Emperor and Yoda.

As a fan of the OT, i really don't see what all the fuss was with Jar Jar. But i think that i'm in a minority here. He was a just a tool to provide comic relief for the younger audience. Also, wasn't he the first fully realised CGI character?

Jar Jar is faintly annoying but never really bothered me and his species (through Jar Jar's introduction) played quite an important role in Ep 1 with a lovely moral message for the viewers - by putting aside our differences we can work together and achieve victory! And who doesn't love a nice moral message for warming the cockles of your heart?

I think the worst part of II & III had to be Anakin's love interest for Padme which, as acted, came off more as a psycho deranged stalker who was giving her the creeps. In the opening word crawl of ep III I half-expected to see "After being served with a restraining order by his estranged, secret wife, young Anakin Skywalker left Coruscant..."

Go back and watch the scene in II when she's packing and tell me you don't get that vibe. Or any scene with the two of them, for that matter.

Jar jar is the whipping boy for the folly of the newer films. The question might be asked how he would fare in the better made original trilogy, but then, better films wouldn't have a silly character such as he.

I think redlettermedia sums up my feelings towards the newer star wars in his humourous if not creepy reviews on youtube. I won't post the links but if you are looking for a laugh definitely check him out.

In fairness to Jar Jar, the Original trilogy had the Ewoks. If i remember rightly, they too suffered their fair share of scorn.

I like Jar Jar. I don't understand why everyone think's he is so annoying.

When it comes down to it he's just this trilogy's version of C3P0. What's the difference? A British accent?

Well, Jar jar had a much larger screen presence than C3PO did, because he was a much more "over the top" comedian.

Unfortunately, his screen presence was so large, that it got in the way of the whole viewing experience for people who didn't buy a ticket to see a comedy.

I like Jar Jar also. It reminds of me of myself and how many things I do wrong everyday. I'm not clumsy, but I do other things wrong. Now if Quigon asked me if I was brainless I'd say yes. It would be the truth.

Well, at least you wouldn't "boom the gasser" that's what really got Jar Jar into the whole mess in the first place.
