I like beer.
Weee! I've just received my new copies of Jack Vance's Lyonesse trilogy - Suldrun's Garden, the Green Pearl, and Madouc.

Yes, I've had these books for years, but Vance is my favourite fantasist, and a writer I hugely admire (as you may come to grow tired of hearing), but these editions are special as they are paperback reprints of the Vance Integral Edition (VIE) editions.

VIE vanceintegral.com was an extraordinary fan project - a 44 book hardback reprint of Vance's entire body of work, including his Ellery Queen stories, with Vance's approval and cooperation, with the intention to restore all the texts to 'definitive' versions, taking into account all manuscripts and reprints etc.

I bought these from Edition AI, a few copies are left if there are ony other fanbosy/girls out there , they're a little expensive but well short of the $150+ per volume the original VIE hardbacks now command. There were only 600 sets printed, and I didn't find out about it until it was over so have missed my chance. The sets are now -outrageously- expensive so I'll have to wait for the premium bonds to come in.

Highly recommended for all fantasy readers.

The site says 24 EURO each for Lyonesse books thats pretty cheap if the books are special edition they look like.

How is the condition for your books ? Is it softcover ?

Im interested in Space Opera hardcover VIE. Since its out of print as regular paperback/softcover.

You have any idea when they will reprint other books in Edition AI ? These prices dont scare me if its a rare Vance book like his mysteries or other out of print works.

I wonder if its possible to mail them and ask.

P.S Personally i think you can never admire Vance too much ;)

They are softcover, plain buff covers with author, title, a small graphic, and the Andreas Irle logo on the front.
Print, paper quality, and layout is very nice, and the books are quite heavy, so am assuming a heavier gsm of paper than a standard paperback. They do feel nice to handle.

I don't know about a reprint schedule from EAI, I have asked to be put on an email list for notification, if they have one, but have had no reply. Andreas seems friendly, so I'd drop him a line.

I think I shall be getting Space opera too. I'm hoping to be able to to now complete my Vance collection, filling in all the gaps.

I was thinking of taking the same step on the same trilogy, David. My 80s paperbacks are getting very brown and a little rickety. Although the Van Houten covers still look marvellous.

I used to have a more or less complete Vance collection but have since sold some of it. I had the advantage of working in a major london sf/f retailer with a big 2nd hand section, in my time there I saw just about everything pass through.

Even some of the ridiculously cheap old printings have sometimes survived in pretty good nick... things like 'Nopalgarth', 'Languages of Pao' etc. They are really worth reading if one can find them, especially if you are in a 'Vance phase', as I was at one time, where nothing but looking at the world through his eyes will do. But to me 'Lyonesse' is just wonderful, the cream of what he's done.

Over here english second hand books are rare as the sun in gloomy swedish winter. I havent seen his most famous books as second hand let alone trying to get a complete collection with his out of print books.

Man i wish you were still selling Vance.

Buying through the internet sites like amazon, abebooks which is my only choice is pretty expensive.

Being Vance hardcore fan is very hard over here specially when it feels like 70% of his work specially sf works are out of print.

Sorry... I wish you good luck with this. Every Vance you gain will be far sweeter for the hardship you endure, if that helps. j

I actually mailed the guy from Edition EI and he promised me that Bad Ronald will out by them before christmas.

So thanks to them i will give two christmas gifts to myself in Space Opera and Bad Ronald without any hardship and the annoyance of getting old, damaged versions of Vance books greaaat :D

Nice one. I have a feeling my gifts to self this year may be very similar to yours :)
