Is the Writer's and Artist's Yearbook a good book to own if i want to get published? I have nearly finished typing up my current novel and hope to try and get it published, well after tweaking the book for any errors. The snowbooks state on their website,

We welcome unsolicited manuscripts. I suppose that means we solicit them. Anyway, please do send us your work. This page explains how to do that, but the potted summary is:
- Send us the complete manuscript, via email, to manuscripts [at] snowbooks.com
- We do not accept hard copy submissions - neither bound proofs nor printed manuscripts. If we receive them, they go straight in the recycling. This is because Snowbooks' readers are 4000 miles apart and we're unable to share hard copy manuscripts easily.
- If you are submitting non-fiction, you can email a proposal and short example of the proposed work - a sample chapter, for instance.

What is the likelihood of approaching one of these publishers sans an agent. I remember when I first started writing at 19 and would send manuscripts off to the big firms and wait for my cheque to arrive. About 3-4 months later I would get a rather grey looking piece of recycled paper (unsigned/addressed etc.) saying they only dealt with scripts that arrived via Literary Agents...

Does this list include publishers that would genuinely welcome a request from an author?

Um, surprised to see Carcanet on this list. They're better known for poetry than fiction, and more literary than genre at that. Currently closed to submissions of fiction in English anyway.

Though once upon a time, maybe. Good list.

It might be a good list but I still can't understand why we in Australia have to wait nearly another year before we can get our copies from the bookshops!
