For me the covers are an important part of the deal, I'd love to collect them(in fact I did have an asimov one in a frame but its gone by the wayside). Now for me.being a lover of space travel stories it has to be Chris Foss. His pictures are just so sf'nal,to quote a term seen in a letter to interzone. For fantasy well i've not taken much notice to be honest but Boris Valejo(sp.) is up there. Also Michael Whelan?
Who's yours?

i have a soft spot for darell sweet. the jordan books (after tolkien) really got me into fantasy, and almost 20 years later, no lookin' back...

Michael Whelan did do great cover art for Pern, and a few others, but I first had a liking for Boris Vallejo's work.

The artist I used to go "Wow" over most often as a kid was Bruce Pennington:

Aumania - Fantasy art - Bruce Pennington
The Art of Bruce Pennington

Whether SF, Fantasy or Horror, he always managed to produce startlingly vivid images which really resonated with me.

More recently, both Dominic Harmon and Vincent Chong are producing fabulous work at present. Vincent Chong Art

I was delighted when Vinny accepted a commission to produce an original piece of art for my recent anthology, Celebration:

Wow thats quite a picture!
I have to say i've recognised a few Aldiss books i have or have read on that first Bruce Pennington page!

Everytime I'm really struck by a cover enough to look at who the artist is, it turns out to be Michael Whelan, so I think it's safe to say that he's my favorite.

But I'd also have to give an honorable-mention to Kinuko Y. Craft, who does those amazing, lush covers for all of Patricia McKillip's books.

Sadly, John Palencar's contributions to the Inheritance Series are stunning. I say sadly because the books are tucked away on my bottom shelf for a reason. No offense to the author. ;)

Michael Whelan. I've often purchased a book based on his cover art. Robin Hobb's first two Assassin books for example. Next favorite would be Jody Lee. She did the covers for the Kate Elliott's Crown of Stars in the U.S.
