Interesting that he used Antares as the supernova progenitor, not Betelgeuse as everybody expects.
 
It seems they are both 550 light years away so distance doesn't account for it.

He does seem to have a thing for supernovae though. He used the Crab Nebula in his Gibraltar series.
 
Michael McCollum has started selling his trilogies through Baen. I don't know when that started. He used to just sell via his own site and they were pricey.

I think Gibraltar Earth is better but they are interesting in their similarities and differences.
