Does anyone know this story?
In 1977 I read a sci fi short story about a world where there were two major countries in the world. Instead of going to war with each other they had come to an agreement to hold a war game every so many years.
Each side randomly picked 100 young men to fight in a big arena like in Hunger Games. Each side was given the same weapons and the terrain was divided equally.
During the battle everyone would watch it on TV like a game. They had detectors that could detect a heart beat.
The story is about one boy who is chosen to go to battle and how he is the lone survivor in the end. Since he is a National hero he has free reign to act as he pleases.
