The Blackburn and Scarletti Mysteries
Karen Koehler
Black Death, Feb 2006, 350 pp.
ISBN 0967922089

“Sins of the Father”. Father Dorian Scarletti was born in 1763 and was taken in by a cardinal to sing in the Vatican choir. As he grew older his voice became a haunting thing of beauty but when a dark creature attacked him, his voice turned into a death song. The Coven made up members of the Catholic Church and vampires realize he is a dhampire bred by the church and trained to be a slayer, killing vampires who break the underworld laws. In the 1920’s and 1940’s he kills a vampire who murders gangsters and criminals, drinking their blood and eating their organs leaving the message I Repay on their bodies. In the present, FBI Agent January Blackburn is assigned to work with Scarletti to solve a crime outside the box. Their case is identical to the ones in the twenties and forties and Blackburn is about to learn about a world she never knew existed.

“The Hyde Effect”. Blackburn and Scarletti investigate the death of two twenty-something men, their throats torn out and their bodies eviscerated with wolf hairs everywhere. They go to Dante’s, a place that caters to werewolves and shapeshifters but bans vampires; they are assured that the master’s werewolves had nothing to do with the killings, but ask angrily why Scarletti brought Blackburn, a ghoul rather than a human tribute. Realizing the dreams she had of Jaguar, Scarletti’s master who taught him how to be a slayer, are true, Blackburn realizes the truth about what she has turned into. Scarletti is furious with what he sees as a betrayal and when a third corpse turns up Blackburn handles it uon her own.

Both these novels are fantastic with the trademark storytelling that is unique to Karen Koehler an author who has made an art form all of the novels she writes. Both tales flashback to pivotal moments in Scarletti’s life; the more readers learn about him the more they want stories written about him, an immortal who is not human but winds up protecting them. Blackburn is also an intriguing character who accepts that there are some evil supernatural creatures that must be killed.
