Location in space

Hi. I am a newbie to this forum from Aus. In the late 80's I read a book about our hero working I'm a mine and controlling his position in space by continually typing in his coordinates thus winning the respect of his prison guards who I believe we're ape like creatures..
Can anyone recall this novel? I am hazy about the author but at that time in Australia, Asimov was a big deal.
