This was a short story in Asimov's but I can't remember the name of it. Most of humanity sleeps in hibernation, with the exception of a select few who are necessary to maintain life support systems for all. Human-built, post singularity AI seems to have discovered some unfriendlies while burrowing "into the bedrock" of reality and require local computational resources to win the fight. Conscious activity is expensive, therefore most people hibernate to help the cause. Ahhh, I love this story but don't remember the name!
