Color thesaurus

Alternatively, any Dulux colour-chart.

"Her face went a blend of apple white and soft almond 4 as she beheld the explosive result of little Hammy's over-stuffing of his cheek pounches."

The cantaloupe sand stretched out to the admiral blue sea. Out on the horizon a candy coloured ship crept along the Firth to the porpoise coloured North Sea.

That list certainly does grow more fanciful as it goes along. However, I can see how dropping in such fanciful descriptions of color (although, ideally, one's own inspirations) every now and then would be lovely.

I have a bad habit of just describing colours as red, blue, green, etc.

My wife is an artist, and I swear knows about 20 different words for red. :)

I think it will be handy for all the people trying to figure out whether they want their ceilings to be white, off-white, eggshell, antique, or cream. :D

I'm guessing you've not spent much time looking at paint samples. The number of different whites in that thesaurus is nothing compared to the different shades of white you could use to paint your ceiling.

Or all at once! It's easier to just buy a can of each.

Err...well, yes, I meant for all the people (usually men, in commercials and jokes) who don't know which one they have already. (I'm that one in my house, who usually buys the wrong one anyway.)

Pantone anyone ? :D

This is good!
http://blog.xkcd.com/2010/05/03/color-survey-results/

Over 900 common colors / colours named by over 100,000 people (self selected)
http://xkcd.com/color/rgb/

Amazingly women and men do NOT use significantly different names
There were about 40,000 women and 100,000 men in the main data set used for this, which could in principle skew things (if men are overrepresented and disagree with women over what a particular color is) but when I reran the analysis with the genders separated the results were roughly the same.

The original post http://www.boredpanda.com/color-thesaurus-char-ingrid-sundberg/
is good and complementary to Randall Monroe's XKCD as it gives alternate names for the SAME colour (hence Thesaurus as they are synonyms)
