Assistance Please!

Hello!

So, short and sweet. For years I've been trying to remember the name of a science fiction book, but I don't remember enough to just google it. Here's what I remember:

-The main character (I think he was the main character) is like a detective?
-He is able to point at someone (using his hand like a gun) and transport them to wherever he's thinking.
-I'm pretty sure he would get a headache afterwards?
-And I remember the author describing a popping noise when he'd teleport people...
-He may have teleported someone to Egypt?

Sorry this is so vague, I really hope the info sparks someones memories so I can find this book!

Any idea when you read it? A lot of the detail sounds a bit like Fade To Black by Francis
Knight, (the detective, the hand/gun, the link to pain, the transportation of people) but that's reasonably recent.

It was probably...at least 15 years ago... and the book was quite worn at the time I read it, too. I looked up the Fade to Black...sounded interesting! But not the book, thanks for the reply though! I really appreciate it!
