Paddington Bear Michael Bond
Doctor Doolittle & sequels Hugh Lofting. Very good, although the first one is now so politically incorrect as to be almost unbearable. The Eddie Murphy movies have no resemblance at all to the books.
The Wombles Elizabeth Beresford. Sort of cuddly animals.
The Moomintroll stories Tove Jansson. Cuddly anthropomorphic creatures. Terrific stories, surprisingly dark in places.

When I was little, I had all these Rupert Bear books; loved the mysteries, and also the way in which giant, human-like animals lived alongside ordinary humans. Those were very surreal stories!
