Warner Bros has announced a new Lord of the Rings game, a third-person action RPG going by the name of War in the North.

Developed by Snowblind Studios and due for release next year, the game will be out for the PC, Xbox 360 and PS3.

The big news here is that this is the first gory – i.e. rated mature – action role-player based in Tolkien’s world, and it also features co-op play with an innovative online system.

Two players will be able to tackle the adventure split-screen on the same console, and they can be joined by a third player online. (Or two players can tackle it online, together).

Both familiar settings and characters are promised, along with some new previously unseen lands to mix things up a bit.

A well fleshed out system of character and weapon customisation is also planned, as players work co-operatively to destroy Sauron’s armies in the North.

Along with the main campaign, for which an original storyline is promised, players will be able to tackle special challenge missions such as group raids.

Even with the details a bit thin at this stage, War in the North sounds like quite a promising little effort. Three player co-op is something we really enjoyed in Trine, the surprise role-playing puzzle platforming hit for the PC (and PS3) last year.
