Atari and Cryptic Studios have unveiled a new role-playing game called Neverwinter.

Neverwinter is based on the famous D&D city, which in the game finds itself in turmoil following the sad demise of the last Lord of the city, and the ensuing struggle between rival factions who all wish to rule.

Throw in a recent “spell-plague”, which apparently has taken a considerable toll on the population, and the fact that the dead are beginning to rise from their graves, and you have what might be referred to as a bit of a pickle.

And one which is designed to be tacked co-operatively, with folks forming five person parties online, or making up the group with AI characters, all drawn from one of five classic D&D classes.

Cryptic is also promising a powerful content generation tool which is currently codenamed Forge. This will allow players to create their own quests and spin their own story arcs, whether they are tales of power struggles, undead domination, or a missing tea pot which threatens to bring down the guild of cabbage hurlers from the inside. Basically, whatever your imagination will run to, no matter how crazy…

The game launch is part of a multiple release which also encompasses the first book in R.A. Salvatore’s Neverwinter trilogy, and a tabletop role-playing game from Wizards of the Coast. The novel, Gauntlgrym, is out on October 5th, and previews the settings, characters and events which lead up to the PC game.

Jack Emmert, COO of Cryptic Studios, commented: “We’re beyond thrilled to develop a brand new version of Neverwinter. It’s been years since the original became a gaming icon and we’re honoured to work with such a great franchise. We’ve been working closely with Wizards of the Coast and R.A. Salvatore to create an authentic D&D adventure filled with compelling fiction and exciting gameplay.”

Expect Neverwinter the game to be released in the fourth quarter of 2011 on the PC.
