Winners of the 2010 Sunburst Awards for Canadian Literature of the Fantastic have been announced. The award this year is for books published in 2009.
In order to be eligible for the award, a work must be by a native or naturalized Canadian citizen either living in Canada or abroad, or by a Landed Immigrant in Canada. The work must be a novel or a book length collection of science fiction, fantasy, horror, magic realism or surrealism. Book written in English or translated into English are considered equally.
The winner in the category of adult fiction was Indigo Springs (Tor), by A. M. Dellamonica, while the winner for young adult fiction was Half World (Puffin Canada), by Hiromi Goto.
Winners of the Sunburst Awards, which are named for the first novel written by Phyllis Gotlieb, one of the first contemporary Canadian speculative fiction writers published, are chosen by a panel of jurors. This year’s jurors were Don Bassingthwaite, Gemma Files, Susie Moloney, Ursula Pflug and Ed Willett. The panel of jurors for the 2011 Sunburst Awards have already been chosen and includes Julie Czerneda, Kate Freiman, Mark Leslie, Christopher Roden and Alison Sinclair.
The winners of the award receive a hand-crafted medallion and a cash prize of $1,000.
