THQ has announced that Darksiders will have a sequel out next year.

The original acclaimed action-adventure (which, incidentally, you can currently get a free copy of if you pre-order Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine on Steam) flew under some people’s radar, but was a highly atmospheric and polished outing.

We’d expect the sequel to be even more polished. The original followed the story of War, the horseman of the apocalypse caught in a battle between demons and angels in, well, the apocalypse.

Darksiders II switches the focus to equally famous horseman Death in a tale which runs parallel to the events in the first game.

A much bigger world is promised, along with a full system of weapon and armour upgrades, more challenging dungeons and of course a whole bestiary of new monsters and hulking great boss creatures.

It sounds like an evolutionary title, although Executive VP of Core Games, Danny Bilson, reckons there’ll be more than just polish here. He stated: “We have taken the best parts of Darksiders and improved on them with a host of new mechanics and features. You will see great things from this epic game.”

Darksiders II will emerge on PC, PS3 and Xbox at some point in 2012. There’s still room for Darksiders III and IV with pestilence and famine starring respectively, but then THQ will run out of material.

Unless they can find another famous horseman for Darksiders V. Zara Phillips, perhaps, we can just see her riding through seas of flame and decapitating demons while cackling insanely. Perhaps.
