Will there be another X-Files movie? The truth is out there, of course, and that truth is that… maybe there will.

Although after the last flick, I Want to Believe, there are many who cringe at the thought of dragging things out further. Many critics hated the 2008 film (although we weren’t quite so down on it ourselves).

There has been quite a lot of speculation lately on whether a third instalment is coming. Fox All Access quizzed Gillian Anderson on the matter last week, and she said that she didn’t know what was happening with a potential three-quel, but would be happy to read a script.

And then at the weekend new rumours hit the internet after Chris Carter (creator of the series) spoke out about the possibility of X-Files 3.

He actually gave some definitive plot details which suggest that the third movie isn’t complete pie in the sky.

Apparently the film would be based on Mayan mythology with 2012 coming up, tying the end of the world theories in with aliens landing. Sounds like a good idea to us.

Although given that they’d need to have such a film out before the close of 2012, obviously, that only leaves a year to put it together and write it, not to mention film it. Which seems a little unlikely.

Our guess is that there won’t be a third X-Files film for this very reason – we might want to believe, but we can’t do so with much conviction. Or if there is an X-Files 3, we’re inclined to think it won’t be out next year, and it won’t be based on 2012.

Which is a shame, as the whole 2012 scenario would work really well to round off the X-Files for good.
