The Gamescom show is currently underway over in Cologne, Germany, and NCsoft is showing off some big guns when it comes to massively multiplayer online gaming.

The main attraction being a new MMOG property entitled WildStar, of which the company has a three part playable build on display over at the show.

The title is being developed by Carbine Studios, which was formed from a number of ex-World of Warcraft devs a few years back.

It’s a sci-fi affair in which settlers have found a distant planet and are laying claim to the new world. You can choose to be an explorer, soldier, scientist or settler character.

Explorers are tasked with uncovering new landmarks and places, and scientists with researching new lifeforms and uncovering the hidden secrets of the planet. Settlers and soldiers are fairly self-explanatory.

Although going by the CG trailer which has just been unveiled, whatever class you are, you’ll be doing a fair bit of fighting against numerous enigmatic and/or vicious creatures.

WildStar promises an “iconic visual style” – cartoony and a bit like WoW, we guess from the trailer – and something called “momentum mechanics”. This apparently means the game will respond to your progress to present fresh quests, challenges and surprises.

A reactive rather than set gaming environment from the sounds of it. While it’s still too early to tell, this is definitely one to keep an eye on.

As well as the sci-fi MMOG, NCsoft has also got Guild Wars 2 on display, showing off new elements such as the engineer class, dungeons and underwater areas. Gamescom attendees will be able to try out some PvP combat, as well as battle with an undead dragon.

Matt Turetzky, executive vice-president of publishing for NCsoft West, commented: “WildStar and Guild Wars 2 showcase the innovation coming from NCsoft’s development studios.”

“We are focused on delighting players by delivering fun, immersive experiences that rival traditional forms of entertainment through personal expression, best-in-class gameplay mechanics, and social engagement.”
