Codemasters has announced that Bodycount, which it calls an “intense arcade shooter” (action shooter, even) is now out in the US, and will be on sale in the UK on Friday.

Coming alongside the launch is the launch trailer, unsurprisingly, which you can take a look at here.

It shows lots of guns, lots of explosions, and lots of poor unfortunates getting blown away to the pounding beat of the background music.

Destructible environments are also shown off, and the footage contains some snippets of action from multiplayer matches, too. Bodycount comes complete with deathmatch and co-op modes for online play.

Codemasters enthused: “Featuring all new gameplay footage, the launch trailer shows how Bodycount’s outrageously overpowered weaponry, dense, intimate environmental ‘shredding’ and intense arcade firefights come together to deliver explosive results.”

It does look undeniably action-packed, although we’re not sure exactly how Bodycount is going to differentiate itself. The over-the-top action theme was handled by Bulletstorm earlier this year, which didn’t fare too well in terms of sales.

Still, as we always say, we shouldn’t pre-judge, and we’ll definitely be giving this one a look.

The story focuses on the pursuit of the “target”, a mysterious figure who has to be gunned down, and probably won’t be that easy to catch. In fact, Codies has the player chasing across continents after the elusive geezer, with no doubt a twist at the end.

Player upgrades are achieved in-game by pulling off skilful moves such as quick chain kills and head shots. Accuracy is of paramount importance despite the game’s carnage motif, with your ranking dependent on not just how many kills you get, but how much ammunition is chewed through to score those kills.

Bodycount is out this Friday on Xbox and PS3, but sadly Codemasters has neglected to put together a PC version.
