If you missed Homefront, it was a shooter THQ released back in March, set in the year 2027 where America had been crushed under the merciless heel of the South Koreans.

The player was a part of the US resistance against the occupying forces, and it was a decent enough FPS, although the game received somewhat mixed reviews.

The naysayers didn’t stop Homefront from shifting a lot of units, though, with sales cresting a million some time ago, and possibly hitting the two million mark by now.

However, Homefront 2′s chances of bettering that already impressive total have just been given quite a boost, with the announcement of the developer for the sequel – Crytek.

Crytek is, of course, the outfit responsible for the Crysis shooters, and is quite the weighty name to get behind the franchise.

Danny Bilson, EVP Core Games at THQ, commented: “Selecting Crytek to take Homefront forward underscores our strategy of working with the industry’s best talent… we’re supremely confident that the next Homefront will deliver that AAA-quality experience that players demand.”

Cevat Yerli, CEO and President of Crytek, said: “We see Homefront as a really strong universe that has a lot of potential and that has been expertly created and marketed by THQ.”

“We believe that bringing our level of quality, creativity and production values to the next Homefront title, creates an opportunity for both THQ and Crytek to deliver a truly blockbuster game.”

“It’s really important to us that THQ has the faith in giving us a lot of creative freedom over one of its most important properties to allow us to bring the Homefront world to life in a new and innovative way.”

Which sounds promising. The developer of the original Homefront, Kaos Studios, was closed down this summer.

Homefront came in for much of its flak for not being polished enough or indeed properly finished, and overly concise in its campaign, mistakes that Crytek is unlikely to make.

So when can we expect Homefront 2 to arrive? It’s slated for THQ’s fiscal 2014, meaning that a second half of 2013 release is probably the most likely scenario.

No details are available on the actual game yet, save for Crytek’s words which suggest that the firm will be changing the engine in “innovative” ways.
