The Walking Dead is nearing the end of the first half of its second season here in the UK.
And it has rather shuffled its way through the initial part of the series, albeit picking up some pace in the last couple of episodes. Even if, regarding the last episode’s cliffhanger – don’t read the next half sentence if you don’t want a slight spoiler – we still can’t quite believe that nobody noticed the barn doors rattling before…
Anyway, the latest news connected to the Walking Dead is that executive producer Gale Anne Hurd is off to Area 51. Not literally, but she’s behind a new TV series which is planned, based on the famously secretive base where all those covered up, crash landed alien spaceships are kept.
Valhalla Entertainment, Hurd’s company, has optioned the rights to Annie Jacobsen’s book Area 51: An Uncensored History of America’s Top Secret Military Base.
The book claims to be something of an authoritative resource on Area 51, based on interviews with some 58 pilots, scientists and engineers who have worked in or around the base.
However, some reviewers have poured scorn on its claims to be an insider’s glance at the real nature of Area 51, with criticisms of the thoroughness of its research and basic factual errors.
Whether the TV series will attempt to keep the authentic and realistic angle to the proceedings, we shall see – although it’s arguable whether the book itself manages this, by all accounts.
The official line is that the show will follow a pair of guys who stumble upon government secrets which must be protected at all costs. Cue the usual car chases, gun fights, and small partially dissected green/grey humanoids from outer space.
We’re betting this will be a one or two season wonder, but who knows, it might catch some popularity with those hankering for a new X-Files type show.
