I started writing a door stopping wedge of a sci-f
A friend of mine just recommended The Risen Empire and Killing of Worlds by Scott Westerfeld.

Since I always hesitate several times before packing yet more books onto my shelves, I'd like some more opinions.

Perhaps most importantly, I'd like to know if the two books are especially well written.

I liked them when I read them several years ago. Pace flagged a bit toward the end of the first book, iirc, but I thought they did something interesting with the whole space opera thing.
 
I read it a few years ago, I thought it was a good space opera and it's a pity Westerfeld doesn't seem to have written anything else similar to that.
