Innocence Regained, Innocence Lost

Tom watched the sensors, as the pale blue dot moved closer to their cabin. His sister shuddered.

“Don’t worry – I won’t let him hurt you this time.”

The entire crew knew what was happening, but they wouldn’t stand up to the Captain. They were light-years from help.

The door opened, and their drunken father squinted into the room, his anger palpable.

Tom fired. The body hit the floor.

“You’re safe now – he’s gone.”

Knowledge Gained = Innocence Lost

– How do you plead?
....“It’s her fault. She did it.”
........“I didn’t know what would happen.”

– The middle of the arboretum is under interdiction.

....“She went there, not me.”
........“That snake in the grass said it was OK.”

– You were told. You disobeyed.

....“She led me on.”
........“Put some clothes on and shut up.”

– Your punishment is exile.

....“That ain’t fair. She tempted me to eat it.”
........“And I didn’t even like the bloody apple.”

Homonymous Bosh’s Guardian of Earthy Delicts

“I know.”

“You do, Father?” His face lit up.

“The goldsmith hasn’t seen the censer. Where is it?”

“Here, Father.” He opened the storeroom door, revealing a huge iron vessel. “It’s all there, inside.”

“We can’t use that in the cathedral. Where’s the gilding? And the contents? You haven’t…”

“The censer is full, Father. Look: smoke.” A few grey wisps.

“So what’s that terrible smell?”

“Burnt innocents, Father. And all the guilt you’ll ever need.”

Already Lost

At twelve, they put a spear in my hand and told me to kill boys I’d never met for a king I’d never seen.

At sixteen, that king gave me a sword and charged me with keeping his peace by killing any man who broke it.

At twenty my wife bore me a girl, and I thanked the gods it wasn’t a boy.

For tomorrow I will kill other men’s sons, and take their innocence.
