I can't remember the name of the sage of sci fi books. I think there 5 books.
The theme is that in the future, all people live in city to defend themselves against the outside radiation and mutant. The leading character (Brickman,Brackman ???) should of top gunned his class, and be kept back as an instructor. Instead his results are rigged and he is sent out with the rest of the cadets on a mission to kill more mutants. His plane is shot down and he ends up being cared for by mutants. He falls in love with one of them and has to defend the mutants against his own army. Theme is like Avator !
