Sounds similar to the plot of John Ringo's "Live Free or Die."

A "wormhole" type ring is deposited in the solar system by an unknown race. Another race follows in its wake to essentially enslave humanity under the threat of superior technology.

Sounds vaguely like Timelike Infinity by Stephen Baxter.

Could also be one of the Galactic Centre books by Gregory Benford, In The Ocean Of Night would fit the bill.

No FTL in Benford's Galactic Centre books though and it's sort of the reverse; the mechanicals are doing the destroying.

Piers Anthony's Macroscope had a somewhat similar theme but it was radiation instead of a machine.
