My oldest brother passed away yesterday afternoon. He lived nearby, but we weren't in regular contact. Apparently he found out about three weeks ago that he had lung cancer, but he didn't tell me or our other brothers. He was never one for saying goodbye or having people crying over him, so I guess he just wanted to go without all that.

He hasn't really been the same since Mom died, and I guess she came and took him home with her.

    Rest in peace, John.

My thoughts are with you. My father passed away from an aggressive lung cancer a number of years ago and whilst it was no comfort at the time it was a blessing that he did not suffer on and on.
Blessings to you and your family; may he rest at peace.

My deepest sympathy TDZ to you and your family. He's in a better place now and Mom will be with him.

    God bless them both.

I lost my father in a similar way - two months from diagnosis of lung cancer to when he passed on. I know it's hard now, but there's some comfort in the fact that it was quick - I still remember my dad from the years before the final four weeks, rather than as he was at the end, which has been a great comfort to me.

All the very best at this time - stay strong and remember him well.

Very sorry to hear about this, TDZ. It's a trite thing to say, but you're probably going to go through a lot of emotional changes as you adjust to this; and I agree with Pyan that it is important to recall what you loved about him, for that will both honor his memory and help you to make it through some of what lies ahead... and in the end, will allow you to still "have him with you" even though he is gone....

I was hoping the thread title was a metaphor; alas. I'm very sorry to hear that, TDZ. I know how difficult a sudden, unexpected death can be, especially when you can't say goodbye.

I hope that you and your family will cope with the coming days and weeks, and your brother and mother are at peace.

Sorry to hear of your loss too, Warren.

My condolences also. Perhaps Emily Dickinson arranged the failure of words into its most successful sentiment regarding the loss of loved ones:

    The World is not Conclusion.
    A Species stands beyond -
    Invisible, as Music -
    But positive, as Sound

    At least I hope so.

I was really hoping this was a bit more metaphoric...
Alas you have my condolence Dusty. As others have said, keep your friends close and they'll help you through this.
