Yes, this seems valid. But, the great thing about the digital market is that it's much more forgiving than the traditional publishing market. As has already been raised in this thread, if one ballses up one's debut in the traditional market then one can expect to be quickly dropped from the publisher's eye, regardless of one's talent.
Contrarily, the digital market is just the reader, so as long as one is writing what the reader wants to read, then the readers are likelier to forgive one's shoddier past works in favour of one's newer, better works.
