Game of Thrones HBO - Disappointments, discuss.

I take from the "professionals" who write and direct for TV audiences. Sometimes you have to hit us over the head with that sort of thing. If not, to set up the events that follow.

I find it quite disturbing everyone using the word "head" to describe that scene! :D

Their relationship went completely over my head while reading the books!

My wife says Jaime's hairstyle and his jacket look too modern.
I thought that little fight scene went too quick as far as the other of Starks men, two spear throws and Jory/Jaime then Ned/Jaime.

I hate myself for saying this. The series is losing me. While I understand that changes needed to be made for everything to work on television, it is completely over the top. Seems like the producers are going for more of a "wow factor". Part of the appeal of ASOIF is the mental treasure hunt which is completely non-existent so far on HBO. It was interesting to piece out that Renly and Loras were lovers, now its been thrown out there for shock value ruins it. If they wanted this scene, it would be more in place in season 2. Why waste the time on it now (other then to add another group viewer ratings). Completely out of place and took up WAY to much time. Robert and Cersei, while the scene was interesting it feels useless. The sex scenes and gore..... yes its HBO, yes its in the books , yes it has completely stolen all of the scenes at the expense of the information that is needed. Who spends that much time talking while doing the deed ?? No flow at all (or maybe to much flow ? ). I will continue to subscribe if only to see it out, but it feels like a low budget porn soap opera that jumps around like mad. Cannot understand why so many of the non-important characters (at this point) are so heavily focused on while the very important ones, with important story arcs and information are being glossed over. Just venting... sorry

Midnight!!! Long time, no see. And... I agree that I don't want to be wowed, I want to be intrigued.

Renly's casting makes me sad.
Renly and Loras both look like trolls. And Loras is so skinny. I know he was slight in the books, but come on, he's been holding lances and swinging swords his whole life.

I take it you never watched 'Soldier, Soldier.'

No, I don't watch crap. ;)

Of course I know that both Robson and Jerome were in Soldier, Soldier before they did the singing lark. I'm not a doofus. It's just that 'Robson and Jerome' the singing act were a bit daft. That was my point.

Admittedly, yes they do. But at least Loras is a pretty troll! And I like skinny blokes. ;)

Not having seen any of the series (so far), I'm concerned about all this talk of gratuitous nudity, a lot of it seemingly coming under the heading, info-humping. Are these sex scenes shown back-to-back? Is the sex Wall-to-Wall...?

I think I should be told.

Conor - I'm totally with you. I've read the books and listened to the audio books and it was a complete shock to me last night to see the scene with Loras and Renly. I definitely didn't pick this up from the books - whereabouts is it? Have HBO taken this out of context? Or is it just me being plainly ignorant?

If you look at the poll in the thread Conor has put up (http://www.sffchronicles.co.uk/forum/531805-ok-so-who-knew-about-loras-and-renly.html), you'll notice that a large majority (of the admittedly small numbers of voters) were aware of the preferences of Renly and Loras before the TV show let everyone in on their secret.

It wasn't a foreground issue in the books and there's so much else to decipher that I'm not surprised some readers missed it.

Ursa, don't know if you will be relieved or disappointed but personally I don't feel there is too much sex, certainly not Wall-to-Wall. There have been 2 scenes in 5 episodes (Viserys/slave girl(can't remember her name) and Renly/Loras) that were a little too much and yes were info-humping. Yet all-in-all I don't feel it's overdone. oh forgot 1 with Theon is the same thing, that one contains a brief surprise!;)

Ursa: In 95% of the scenes, people have clothes on. The rest is "parental advisory". To date, I can count 8 sex scenes (3 featuring Dany & Drogo, 1 featuring Theon & Roz, 1 featuring Tyrion and Roz, 1 featuring Jaime & Cersei, 1 featuring Loras & Renly, 1 featuring Vyserys and one of Dany's handmaidens)

Too much is being made of those scenes. I mean what did we expect? Something rated PG? This is GRRM for the Seven's sake! Just wait until the war starts with the rapes and we get introduced to Ygritte and Shae.

If your eyes are virgin...you may want to go get a drink during those very short scenes.

Thank you! Please vote in the poll if you have not.

I just thought with The Rainbow Guard, Renly's green armour and various other colourful references was just Martin's way of making the story more visually colorful.

When I saw the Crying Game for the first time I had just thought "She's got big hands" when the main charachter was getting his hair done...a few other things in the movie made me wonder too, like the bar etc. A year or so later watching it on cable I thought "How could I have not seen it?"

I had planned on re-reading the books when time so will see then for the subtle references.

Well said TK

The "blessing" of HBO is they can pretty much show whatever they like because it's premium cable and they are only restricted by the tastes of their audience. The fact that there was sex in the books probably made it an easier concept for HBO to get on board with. They didn't really have to invent anything, just tell what was already there.

Sorry, Needle and TK (and Imp): I really should have put at least one  in post#71. (Sometimes one, naked ellipsis is just not enough.)

Though I suppose it does go to show that, as with the R+L business, we pick up visual clues more easily than (a string of) textual ones.

Really? I'd go Renly over Loras!

Eh?! Madness. Loras has such lovely hair.

Re: The sex. I can't say that I've noticed an excessive amount. I was more screwing my nose up at the violence, although I watch (and write) some pretty gruesome stuff so maybe I'm just being a girl. I say let's have more sex. Sex for everyone. Make love not war and all that.

:D

Well I have no problem with the sex, I personally haven't felt that it was intrusive or over the top (except perhaps THE scene but that was more surprise of it coming out of nowhere.)

I asked Mrs P. as a none Martin reader whether she thought excessive, and her response was: "What Sex? There isn't enough."
