Subterranean Moon Aliens

I read this book over 25 years ago and it was young adult - about explorers on the Moon who find a subterranean civilization. It was AT LEAST from the '70s or '60s, if not earlier. Any help would be much appreciated.

OK try these:

Hugh Lofting - Dr Dolittle. Gets there by giant moth.

There was a film in the sixties (which I wouldn't ming finding the name of) where the earth gets attacked by aliens using the moon as a base. An expedition is sent to the moon for a look see and finds a large base there. There is a battle and then they return to earth to continue the fight. The vehicles they take to the moon are fitted with a ray (laser or something of the kind) which is demonstrated at the UN to convince people that they have the fire power to take the baddies on.
