I wasn't sure whether to post this in the music section or here, but here goes. When I saw this on the BBC website, I was intrigued at the process that brought this piece of history back to life, especially since the recordings were "never intended to be played."

BBC NEWS | Technology | Oldest recorded voices sing again

This is a fascinating discovery, and it makes me wonder what other recordings there are.

What a magnificent historical little voice! It's hard to imagine all the great music could only be heard 'live' before phonograph invented. Nah, I wouldn't wanna live in that 'dark age'. :p Thank you so much for posting the wonderful news, Tal! :)

Agreed, especially as illustrated by their contrast of that recovered voice to Edison's work. It's also amazing that technology has actually reached the ability to recalculate how something sounded purely from taking an image of the original media here, and perhaps even more amazing that the original media survived intact as long as it has.
